Change your ebay password ASAP

They were hacked.... and just NOW are telling us about it

http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/ebay-warns-customers-change-passwords-after-database-hacked-n110961

Personal information for all of eBay’s 145 million active buyers could have been accessed in a hack two months ago, a company spokeswoman said, as the online marketplace advised all users to change their passwords Wednesday.

The database contained encrypted passwords and was compromised from late February into March. The hacked database contained customer information including names, phone numbers, birth dates, home addresses and email addresses. It did not include financial information, the site said.

The breach was discovered about two weeks ago, according to eBay, leading to a probe that identified the hacked database. The company said it is "aggressively investigating the matter" and working with law enforcement.
EBay users will be contacted by the company on Wednesday asking them to change their passwords. A notice asking users to change their eBay passwords was first posted on the company website for PayPal, which is owned by eBay and handles its online payments. Users who use the same password on eBay and other websites should change their passwords on all sites, the company said.

PayPal released a statement saying that an investigation has not uncovered any evidence that information for its customers was hacked.

1. I wonder if this was Anonymous? They were contemplating some act of protest...

due to the relationship between Greenwald, and his pet billionaire. Hmmmm.....

4. Thanks. I have actually been considering becoming someone else for online

Like making up a fake name & using prepaid cards with finite balances for all online purchasing.....but then I have to write down all my passwords & user names now because my memory sucks.. I would probably forget who I was

15. That is a very interesting idea. Can you get prepaid cards in different names?

16. The prepaid cards I have seen do not need names

They are sold in drug stores/supermarkets, etc.. They do have some fees and may depreciate, but if you used them up right away, it might be worth it to have anonymity

3. I've changed mine. I don't see why eBay was not more forth coming about this immediately. To me,

it's far better to get this out ASAP than suppressing it ... It might damage the branding some, but far better than possibly many having repercussions.

12. I did it, but now I wonder if it's a big deal.

My PayPal account has a separate login so if someone wants to buy something and send it to my house I may be okay with that. Nothing embarrassing though. hahaha

13. This almost certainly involves Chinese Hackers

The new Net Neutrality regulations will help slow them down.
