Rubio won't answer pot question

http://prospect.org/article/republican-candidates-marijuana-dilemma

The Republican Candidate's Marijuana Dilemma

Back in 1992 when Bill Clinton said he kinda smoked pot, but "I didn't inhale," it was a big deal, both for the sort-of admission and for the squirreliness of the evasion. Eight years later, when Barack Obama said not only did he smoke pot, but he inhaled ("That was the point&quot , it was much less of a big deal, partly because Obama made no attempt to explain it away. As we move toward an era when most American adults have at least tried marijuana (more on that below), the chances that any particular candidate will have done it at least a time or two in their younger days grows higher and higher. But if you're a Republican, it's still complicated, since a large proportion of the population whose votes you need look at pot as something only done by hippies and jazz musicians.

You can see this struggle in the person of Marco Rubio, soon-to-be presidential candidate and erstwhile GOP golden boy. Yesterday he got asked in an interview with ABC's Jonathan Karl whether he had ever smoked pot, and here's what he said:

"If you say that you did, then suddenly there are people out there saying, 'Well, it's not a big deal. Look at all these successful people who did it.' And I don't want my kids to smoke marijuana. And I don't want other people's kids to smoke marijuana. I don't think there's a responsible way to recreationally use marijuana. On the other side of it is, if you tell people that you didn't, they won't believe you."

Karl gave the appropriate answer to that last part: "We'll believe you. If you didn't, you can just say you didn't." If the answer to the question was actually "no," then there would be no need to go through all this contemplation about the deleterious effect an admission might have on our nation's youth. Rubio's rationale for remaining mum is exactly the one George W. Bush had back in 2000 when he refused to answer any question about whether he had ever done drugs (there were rumors of cocaine use, as well as pot). As Bush said in a recorded conversation with advisor Doug Weade released in 2005, "Do you want your little kid to say, 'Hey Daddy, President Bush tried marijuana; I think I will.' … I wouldn't answer the marijuana question. You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried."

He's a crappy senator who barely slipped into office after a three way race. Nothing more.

because he is seen as likely to run in 2016, and therefore will fulfill the role as one of the GOP's tokens (like with Mr. 9-9-9).

One thing that was SOOOOO refreshing about Obama was his willingness to tell the simple truth. Clinton's "I didn't inhale" -- well, just like the didn't do something else with someone else, when you look back at it.

So, honesty is a big tell, as much as evasion.

Conservatives want to be authoritarians - so their refusal should be looked at as a rerun of Georgie boy - cause he refused to tell the truth about A LOT of things - including reasons to invade Iraq.

Really. This is like a litmus test for whether you're dealing with someone with no respect for the American people or what they want... that was what the entire Bush residency was like - I hate to think who might play the Cheney role with this lightweight.

By not answering he answered. He lets the party use him as a prop, he will never ever be president.
They all need to get their hands on a bag, it might make them human for a while.

The rationale for lying or evading the question is that we don't want kids to know the truth?

The truth being: you can recreationally use cannabis and still be a successful person.

Why is that so scary? The truth, I mean.

So you can maintain an illusion and a lie about recreational cannabis use?

This goes to the question of ethical behavior. Ethical people don't lie to kids or to anyone else.

There is more harm done to our kids by the War on Drugs than has ever been done to kids by cannabis. That's the real truth Rubio is too ashamed to face.

when the reality is that specific times/cultures determine that more than anything. when people knew the lies told about reefer madness, they said... huh, I guess they're lying about these other things too.

But, as I posted in the drug policy forum - the gateway theory has been debunked - yet it is STILL one of the go-to lies by the prohibitionists.

Just another way they do more harm than good.

What Rubio is saying is:

"I LIE TO People because I am AFRAID of what the truth might signify."

So what else is he lying about to protect the "delicate ears of youth?'

And how much harm will he and others allow the War on ( Some ) Drugs to do to our kids before it's too late?

"Um I don't want to admit my hypocrisy here, so um, I'm gonna lie and obfuscate, mkay?"

NO! NOT OKAY!

I'm not even a fan. I don't like the stuff; it makes me feel bad. But I grew up in a small Baptist town in Mississippi and it's not "exotic" to me. Where is this strange country that smoking pot is somehow unusual?

10. Everything for Republicans is like abstinence only
Wed May 21, 2014, 04:57 AM
May 2014

I would LOVE to hook up some of these religious a-holes who insist on abstinence only to a lie detector and ask "Were you a virgin when you married?"

Even if they only had sex with one person, I would bet you they had sex before they got married...based upon my knowledge of those same sorts when I was younger living in southern baptist land.

Abstinence only is a policy destined to fail, just like the drug war.

But instead of talking rationally about these things, it has to be "all or nothing." To me - that's almost like a definition of the sort of thinking among religious conservatives who happen to be have racial prejudices (tho they would never think they're racists).

Either/or.

Just not the way humans are.

Which is why Republicans are so bad at governing - they just don't like the reality that reality is messy, not good/bad, moral/immoral, did/didn't, need some help/self-made "man" (sic)

every president/pol is going to make decisions that don't make everyone happy - but, yeah, I'd definitely vote for him again, given the choice.

with a democratic majority in the legislature - that would be a great moment.

He has been impressive in so many ways - esp. the way he has handled his opposition.
