<snip>
Julia Collins from north suburban Kenilworth climbed into an elite rank of winners with Tuesdays game, which marked her 12th consecutive win on the long-running quiz show.
The 31-year-old supply chain professional became the third person in history to win a dozen games back-to-back. Only David Madden (19 wins) and Ken Jennings (74 wins) have emerged victorious in more games than she has.
"When Alex [Trebek] announced that I was in third place for most wins, it reminded me that my streak was pretty unusual, Collins said in an emailed statement. Its exciting to set a Jeopardy! record of any kind.
Julia will face off against two new challengers Wednesday with the hopes of continuing her streak and adding to her $245,610 in total winnings.

(22,057 posts)I have little doubt she'll surpass Madden and may even give Ken Jennings a run for the title....

(268,930 posts)Now we have not only Tournament of Champions and Tournaments of the Decades.

(14,061 posts)But somehow she's different. She plays the board pretty straight, unlike Arthur, who just had to find the Daily Doubles and eliminate his competition by the first commercial break, and she seems very down to earth and a good sport.
Was it just me, or was she actually sitting out most of the second round Thursday night? She had a pretty unbeatable score by that point, and she had to have known the answers to all of those questions. Pretty classy not to run up the score on the other two.
Continued good luck to her.
malaise
(268,930 posts)Ken and several of the Tournament of the Decades players use the same approach as Arthur and people did not complain about them.
Trebek hated Arthur and that was visible, but I still don't know his reason for that.
AngryOldDem
(14,061 posts)I know that isn't fair, this is all very subjective, and I recognize that he is an incredibly intelligent person, but I never got the sense that Arthur respected either the show or the other contestants. It was like he was gaming the system and it irked. Arrogant people really, really put me off.
I think what differentiates him (and a lot of other long-winning contestants) from Julia is, I don't get the sense of entitlement and cockiness in Julia that a lot of them seem to take on the longer they're on the show. That's why I didn't shed any tears the night Arthur went down big, and why I don't mind her winning streak -- she is very grounded and seems grateful for her run.
Of course, YMMV.
malaise
(268,930 posts)and he really knew the answers.

Of course the answers were wrong, but that hardly slowed him down.
By the end I had tears in my eyes.

(42,753 posts)I wonder if her time away from her last job to be on the show caused her problems with her employer?
I think after making that announcement on national TV she will have many good offers to choose from.
And IIRC she said she has a Master's Degree in a business related field.
malaise
(268,930 posts)<snip>
Every now and then a competitor comes along who plays his or her game of choice at a level so far beyond the rest of the field that it almost seems unfair. Wayne Gretzky in the 1980s, Michael Jordan in the 90s, Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters in the 2000s, LeBron James today. You watch them play and can do nothing but shake your head. Their dominance transcends the physical act of what theyre doing and becomes something else. Something you and I and all the other mortals out here will never fully understand. Something special.
I bring this up because something amazing is happening on Jeopardy! right now. Julia Collins, a 31-year-old art history major from outside Chicago, is just killing everyone. Everyone. As of last nights episode, she has earned $391,600 over her 18 consecutive victories, a dollar figure that makes her the highest-earning woman in the shows history, and a win streak that puts her one away from tying David Madden for second longest of all-time. (Ken Jennings holds the record for most consecutive wins with 74, which is just ridiculous.) And some of her victories havent even been close. I mean, take a look at this screencap from the end of Double Jeopardy on Tuesday night.
----------------------------------------
Why would she need a job now - I'd take six months off.

(268,930 posts)At dinner time they'd read or discuss stuff and any new word brought out the dictionary and they'd discuss the origin of the word and use it in sentences.
That's why she's having so much fun.

(145,129 posts)At anyone time, there are 2,500 or so people in the pool and they only use 300 or 400 contestants in a year.

(145,129 posts)To get into the pool, you take the online test and then if you have a high enough score, they invite you to a try out where you take another test in person and then play a practice round. There is an interview and then if you qualify, you go into the pool from which they select contestants.
According to my son, the tryout was nerd/geek central with a group of potential contestants having a serious debate as to which Doctor was their favorite Doctor from the BBC series.
Three of my son's quiz bowl team mates have already been on Jeopardy with one classmate winning twice before bombing out on the third day. The other two classmates lost on their first day but two of them were just out of college when they qualified. This is the third time my son has qualified if you count the high school tournament.

(145,129 posts)Jeopardy film five episodes in one day and so a multiple day champ has to have some endurance. My kids watched Jennings' streak very carefully and you could tell that he was tired and not as sharp on the Thursday and Friday episodes.
