another trouper who shot his fridge when he dropped it. A deputy who died after shooting himself in the leg when pulling his gun out. But this are all guys that I guess are untrained in weapons.

25. So the first trooper didn't want to clean his tv?

Or he tried to clean a loaded gun?

Did the second one get mad at his fridge after he dropped it and shoot it?

Was the deputy that died in Arkansas? How long ago? Did it make the papers?

Sounds like all 3 could maybe have used a little more training or go the Barney Fife route.

That's something that you know 3 law officers that shot themselves. Not being snarky about that. I've been around many, many people over the past 40+ years and can say that, as far as I know, none of them, while I knew them, shot themselves. Not saying that they haven't shot themselves since the last time I saw them though.

Remarkable.

30. Oh, I imagine it happens a lot

Mike, who shot his TV took a lot of ribbing, since it happened the night Cops was on TV

The deputy, by the story in the newspaper died from blood loss due to an accident in his shop.

I used to work on their 2-way radios, so I knew them quite well and went on plenty of midnight rides. All very good guys. But shit happens. Probably more than they like to admit to themselves. Cleaning their guns and taking them off and putting them on every day they may forget to check the chamber, just once out of a million times of doing it. Forgetting to check the safety just that one time.

These were may years ago, back when the cops would reach for their black jack before guns. Back when the use of firearms did not get used unless the perp had a gun and was shooting or about to.

33. Yeah

You can get in a habit and get careless doing anything. It's easy.

The tv story is even funnier knowing what was on it at the time.

That is terrible about the deputy that died.

I remember when the cops weren't so militaristic and a main/big money maker for the city, county or state and you didn't have to worry about making a wrong move during a traffic stop.

Either your circle of close acquaintances (that is, people who you know well enough to know they own a gun) is filled with complete and utter fuck-ups...or you have psychic powers. Well...I suppose you could also think that very few people are actually too dumb to own a gun, which strikes me as naive, to say the least.

Oh, and they "usually kill someone with it?" Really? You realize "usually" means "generally" or "under normal conditions," right? Do you know an absolutely tiny (and absurdly non-representative) number of people or do you live in the maximum security wing of a prison?

23. People control (not gun control)!

About every few months I get a chance to post this...sorry if you've seen it before. And to respond to part of this thread, I have personally known three people who killed or were killed by guns (when the gun possessor should never have been allowed near a firearm).

This is my generic response to gun threads. For the record, I grew up in the South and on military bases. I was taught about firearms as a child, and I grew up hunting, was a member of the NRA, and I still own guns. In the 70ís, I dropped out of the NRA because they become more radical and less interested in safety and training. Some personal experiences where people I know were involved in shootings caused me to realize that anyone could obtain and posses a gun no matter how illogical it was for them to have a gun. Also, easy access to more powerful guns, guns in the hands of children, and guns that werenít secured are out of control in our society. As such, hereís what I now think ought to be the requirements to possess a gun. Iím not debating the legal language, I just think itís the reasonable way to stop the shootings. Notice, none of this restricts the type of guns sold. This is aimed at the people who shoot others, because itís clear that they should never have had a gun.

1.) Anyone in possession of a gun (whether they own it or not) should have a regularly renewed license. If you want to call it a permit, certificate, or something else that's fine.
2.) To get a license, you should have a background check, and be examined by a professional for emotional and mental stability appropriate for gun possession. It might be appropriate to require that examination to be accompanied by references from family, friends, employers, etc. This check is not to subject you to a mental health diagnosis, just check on your superficial and apparent gun-worthyness.
3.) To get the license, you should be required to take a safety course and pass a test appropriate to the type of gun you want to use.
4.) To get a license, you should be over 21. Under 21, you could only use a gun under direct supervision of a licensed person and after obtaining a learnerís license. Your license might be restricted if you have children or criminals or other unsafe people living in your home. (If you want to argue 18 or 25 or some other age, fine. 21 makes sense to me.)
5.) If you possess a gun, you would have to carry a liability insurance policy specifically for gun ownership - and likely you would have to provide proof of appropriate storage, security, and whatever statistical reasons that emerge that would drive the costs and ability to get insurance.
6.) You could not purchase a gun or ammunition without a license, and purchases would have a waiting period.
7.) If you possess a gun without a license, you go to jail, the gun is impounded, and a judge will have to let you go (just like a DUI).
8.) No one should carry an unsecured gun (except in a locked case, unloaded) when outside of home. Guns should be secure when transporting to a shooting event without demonstrating a special need. Their license should indicate training and special circumstances beyond recreational shooting (security guard, etc.).
9.) If you buy, sell, give away, or inherit a gun, your license information should be recorded.
10.) If you accidentally discharge your gun, commit a crime, get referred by a mental health professional, are served a restraining order, etc., you should lose your license and guns until reinstated by a serious relicensing process.

Most of you know that a license is no big deal. Besides a driverís license you need a license to fish, rent scuba equipment, operate a boat, or many other activities. I realize these differ by state, but that is not a reason to let anyone without a bit of sense pack a semiautomatic weapon in public, on the roads, and in schools. I think we need to make it much harder for some people to have guns.

Tom Tomorrow is great!

53. Yes, you can beat any system.

So we should not have drivers licenses, or pilot licenses, and we should give five year olds. Loaded guns? There has to be a reasonable way to prevent some people from easily getting guns. It may be inconvenient, but it's worth the trouble to save some lives. Not foolproof, but a step in the right direction.

If you pass the vision test at the dmv and get in a wreck...you can't sue the person who sold you a pair of glasses. If you want assurance you won't get it from a license. But it will prevent a few people from killing, committing mass murder, and easily buying guns willy billy even though they are clearly unstable. Some even report they are unstable. Check out all the mass murders lately!
