MONTGOMERY, Alabama --- The League of the South has put up a billboard on Interstate 85 near downtown Montgomery with a one word message: Secede.
The league, which has called for secession since its founding 20 years ago and has been labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, has information about its new billboard campaign on its website:
"The League of the South has a message all freedom-loving Southerners ought to hear. It is the message of Southern independence from a sinking, corrupt, and destructive government in Washington, DC."
Michael Hill, president of the league, said the billboard is the second of the campaign. Another 'Secede' billboard was posted in Tallahassee, Fla. And a third is planned for Atlanta this summer, Hill said.

(30,058 posts)But on the other hand if we could successfully secede this group then it would be Democrats in every office.

(31,893 posts)I live in Minnesota, no secessionists here. Although we do currently prefer to distance ourselves from our neighbor, Wisconsin.

(82,383 posts)They can only try to make it my some agreement of the rest of the US. And they would have too many people in those states who don't want to do it. They should take a vote and see how the majority in these states really thinks.

(6,342 posts)...it would pretty much completely devastate our economy. And the Federal government could end up in default on it's international financial obligations sending the dollar into a tailspin. It's not about who has more guns or who can invade and capture land. It's about instability. Many investors (and nations) all over the planet have their money invested in America. If instability occurs, those investors all pull their money out...Wall Street and our banks will collapse. Our currency loses value.
So it would be ugly for ALL of us.
Keep this in mind though...we are not going to last forever. America has become somewhat of an "empire" in historical terms and empires have a tenancy to eat themselves alive.

(82,383 posts)Is not really up for it. A majority may be outright against it. They know they have it good as a US state and they don't want to interrupt their lives to the extent it would. Even the ones who say they want to secede wouldn't really fight for it in reality. It's just a wing nut fantasy.

(82,849 posts)Leave that state you're in, though. The United States won it fair and square. But you're welcome to leave the country with whatever possessions you have. You won't be missed.

(32,015 posts)A lot of the phony toughies who loooooove the South to rise again would rather sit around and post such messages on Stormfront or Free Republic but wouldn't go out his door to fight for the cause on the ground.

To paraphrase H.L. Mencken: Nobody ever went broke betting on the ignorance of people in Alabama.
I was born and raised here.
I moved back after 25 years away.
I love my home state, but the politics are hellish.
There is no Democratic party here now.
They are in total retreat.
Internal squabbles.
We elected a state supreme court chief justice who was turned out of office a few years ago for violating federal statutes.
The 10 commandments thing.
Our governor, a physician, has refused the ACA in spite of his supposed Hippocratic Oath.
Every repug running for office in this state runs against the nigger in the White House.
Yes, I wrote the damnable word, but it sure works for the voters here.
We're fucked.
Welcome to Alabama.

(3,811 posts)last summer. They got a permit from the city to hold a rally. Our counter rally outnumbered them at least two-to-one. They looked f%$king ridiculous in their "cowboy" hats and bolo ties. They were pale and greasy and positively creepy. These cowards asked the police several times to make us move back. We were challenging them and mocking them as well.
They're complete clowns -- out of touch with reality.

(146,284 posts)for these folks? Instead of seceding, they could just move.
That's my recommendation. They'd love it in those countries. No laws. No rules. Not much government to speak of.
