Greatest D.U. Posts of All Time

One thing I always wish we had on D.U. was the ability to give a thumbs up, or a Recommend to an individual post.
There are all kinds of posters on D.U., everyone seems to have something special to contribute. Some people are sharp analysts, some have the ability to make everyone crack up with penetrating but thought provoking snark, and there are the some who stand by their principles and stand up when others are uncertain. There are even some with the uncanny ability to predict things turning out entirely differently than anyone expected.

Is there one particular post you regard as a masterpiece? One you feel would be at the top if there were a "greatest posts page"?

the beginning of the Occupy Underground Group...

"OWS STATEMENT OF DEMANDS
#OCCUPYWALLSTREET | #WHEREISTHEMEDIA?

*We DECLINE to take the fall for corporate greed. As the imminent failure of a system is clearly upon us WE THE PEOPLE will not continue to suffer as corporations and institutions enjoy epic gains of profit, federal forgiveness and support that this country in turn denies to the very citizens who make it great. This includes industries of FINANCE, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION/HIGHER EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT, HOUSING, SOCIAL WORK and LOBBYISTS.

*We DEMAND that the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT take an ACTIVE role in disassociating itself from the interests of private Wall Street and honor its position as an agent of the PEOPLE. WE THE PEOPLE DEMAND BOLD ACTION FROM OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO STOP THE CIPHONING OF MONEY INTO THE TOP 5%. We understand this will impact their personal portfolios and invite them to realign their values with those of the American people. (Community, strength, innovation, grit, vision…)

*We OCCUPY WALL STREET and challenge the largest powers of this nation: our military and police forces, the judicial system, corporate/federal employees on every level and academic institutions to IMMEDIATELY STOP practices across-the-board that employ prejudice against people’s racial/ethnic, social and sexual identity. Unlearning the values that oppress one another is the ONLY way to HEAL this ailing nation. How sick are the hearts of the people who can look down with champagne and laugh as we ask to be given a chance to thrive?

*We OCCUPY WALL STREET as people who are challenging our state of suffering. We DEMAND that all citizens aligning themselves with our mission realize this is greater than returning this country to a nostalgic place of ‘betterness’. THIS IS ABOUT REPAIRING, RENEWING AND REVIVING THIS NATION. It is hard work and it is overdue."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x173419#173647

Eloquent, well-researched, hard-hitting.

As a disclaimer, bear in mind that this was a while back - the thread and Sappo's post had a context of what was going on on DU at the time, controversy over moderator actions, perceived indifference from DU's administrators, etc. Today, IMO, the thread itself would be superfluous and Sappho's post inapplicable partially, in light of both the waterfall of positive ongoing marriage equality developments as well as changes in how the board accommodates GLBT issues, and a more supportive membership than existed even only a couple years ago. In other words, positive changes have been fast and furious.

Nonetheless, I think this post was - on a lot of levels - the one I appreciated most of all discussions I can remember.

You didn't get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.

You didn't get mad when we let a major US city drown.

You didn't get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.

You finally got mad when.. when... wait for it... when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick. Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, are all ok with you but helping other Americans... well fuck that. That about right? You know it is. "

This thread had a life for over a year.. It was read on the air by Thom Hartmann and on the View by Rosie O'Donnell who also had it on her front page for a week or so. It also inspired a number of other "you didn't get mad when" writings..

Illegal aliens are stealing water from American fire victims!!!

Some years back, during a particularly nasty string of fires in CA, water was being distributed to all the displaced civilians. Some yahoo with a blog wrote that illegal aliens were stealing water from the "Americans", and a couple of DUers bought it hook, line and sinker.

They were so mind-numbingly intractable in admitting they were wrong that I decided then and there that it was the Greatest Thread of All Time... for the sake of my amusement. A Masterpiece of Dogmatic Absurdity.

Smart Tree Huggers/Arborists: Is eucalyptus a HARDWOOD or a SOFTWOOD?

Married people! Fighting over this kind of crap after 35 years.

We lost a 30-ft. eucalyptus tree in the Portland, Oregon storm today. It was about nine years old and the trunk's diameter is about six inches at the base tapering to about 4 - 5 inches.

It's down on a grassy area -- didn't hit anything except our annual flower bed. I want him to WAIT and hire a tree person to do this work. At least, try to get a chain saw if one is available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But... no.... my husband thinks he can cut this wood up with a handsaw and stack it easily. What can I do? He's a hard-headed 73-year-old who thinks he's still young and spry! Give me some reasons not to pop him one in the noggin tonight!

He's had three back operations. I'm concerned about this level of physical activity. He also almost died when he fell off a 30-ft. ladder in 1995 and broke his wrist and sustained a compound fracture of the elbow and 11 hours of surgery. Now he's arguing with me that at least he won't have to climb to take care of THIS tree. Oh, he was pruning trees that beautiful July day... it wasn't even raining.

Add to that the pressure of flying out of here for a three-week PLEASURE trip to Florida on Saturday. I see visions of him in a plaster cast from nose to toes! Oh, we'll have to pay for an extra seat on the flights first to Seattle and then on to Orlando? Just PEACHY!

Thanks... where's that temper tantrum thread? I'm ready!

Sorry for this rant. I just had to spill it somewhere, and this was the closest punching bag!
