<snip>
A fire at an FAA Air Traffic control center at 1100 Bowes Road in Elgin has completely shut down O'Hare and Midway Airports. All flights are being placed on hold or are being diverted, including to Chicago Rockford Airport.

Initial reports indicate that smoke serious enough to set off the Elgin facility's sprinkler system forced its evacuation at around 11:30am.

Officials at Chicago Rockford could not comment on the impact to them right away other than to say they are 'very busy.'

More information as it becomes available.

if ever there was a life sized example of the "butterfly effect". I used to live under part of the ORD flight pattern and ran air freight in and out of there, what a mess that's going to be over half the globe.
