Craigslist Founder Jumps Into Voting Rights Fight

Ryan J. Reilly March 29, 2012, 11:05 AM

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark is jumping into the voting rights fight, with his group craigconnects publishing an infographic that illustrates the surge of voting restrictions that have been enacted in states around the country in recent years.

“What I learned in high school civics class is that an attack on voting rights is virtually the same as an attack on the country,” Newmark said in a statement. “So I asked people smarter than me to help me do what George Washington would have wanted me to do, collect and release the information you’re getting from us today.”

“I think all Americans should be concerned about these new voter restrictions,” Newmark said. “Voting is our fundamental right. If the states continue to restrict who can vote, who knows where they will stop?”

3. I couldn't agree more; truly baffling to me that there is no sense of urgency that I

can see.

4. If you live in a state in which you can register people to vote,

get started registering them as soon as possible.

If you live in a state in which you cannot register people to vote, get information on how and when they must register and pass it out to all your neighbors -- to everyone you can. Remind them how important their vote is and tell them that they have to take the initiative to register themselves.

If you live in a state that requires photo ID, tell everyone you meet or know to be prepared and take their photo ID with them to the polling booth. Organize a campaign to make sure all people who want to vote have photo IDs. Go to bus stops and tell people who don't drive that they need to get a photo ID anyway.

This needs to happen state by state.

Here in California, some years ago, I was asked to show a photo ID before I could vote -- and I was born and raised here. The couple in front of me were not. They were asked for photo ID, so I was asked also.

These are terrible laws, but the important thing is for everyone to be registered and to vote especially this year.

5. Kicking this post!!!

And it's incumbent upon us, the civilians, to know the individual requirements imposed in our states, because of course they vary widely state-to-state. INFORMATION AND TRUTH. And we damn well better get it out there, spread all over everywhere, if we're to have any chance at all in November. We DARE NOT trust our naive, gullible "representatives," many of whom we should just start calling "roll-overs," to go on offense and do it on our behalf.

13. Where in California was that?

If they did that here (San Jose), I'd be screwn, 'cause my ID is still out of state. (They not only make you waste the better part of a day at DMV to get a CA ID, but they take away your previous one and give you a worthless temporary ID until the real one arrives in about a month, rendering you unable to fly.)

Also, in CA, vote by mail should be a good option for the ID-less.

9. Thanks, Mr. Newmark. Especially for the attack analogy. That's what it is.
