Assassination Attempt Injures Jewish Eastern Ukrainian Mayor
Doctors are fighting to save the life of Kharkiv mayor Hennadiy Kernes who was shot in the back by unknown assailants
Hennadiy Kernes, the Jewish mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, was shot in the back Monday, which led pro-Russian separatists to take control of yet another government building.
Whether it was pro-Russians that led the attack remains to be clear at this point.
The armed pro-Russian insurgents are reportedly backed by Moscow, with Ukrainian and Western governments accusing Russia for organizing the events that have unfolded over past weeks in the region, causing unrest and instability.
With pamphlets, albeit fake ones, being handed out to Jewish residents of Donetsk asking them to register or be deported two weeks ago, it's also caused members of Ukraine's Jewish community to feel unsafe, and afraid of what lies ahead.
Kernes, the Ukrainian Jewish mayor, is currently undergoing surgery, with "doctors fighting for his life" according to statements released by his office.
