If he is forced to sell the Clippers, Sterling will make over half a billion dollars profit

I'm happy with the fine and the lifetime ban, but it bothers me that this piece of pond scum will be enriched by his bigotry.

Is there a better way to deal with him?

How is being forced to sell his team, or at least strongly encouraged to sell, "enriching" him?

Very little can be done to him. It makes no difference how much or how little money he has, either.

"I don't like what he said" is a pretty feeble reason to seize money.

his estate would.

And we'd never know about it.

He's a scumbag, no doubt, and he's apparently been one all his life, but I always wonder about the hate that appears when such people, who have never affected us personally, are brought out into the daylight.

How much punishment is enough?

The important thing from Adam Silver's perspective is to get this cancer (Sterling) out of the NBA. Forcing him to sell the team is the only way to do that.

any. He just kept buying and building his empire. I'd guess being "forced" to sell the team, no matter how much money he makes on it, will be a major slam to his ego. None of the billionaires like to be told what to do!

Using his mega resources to control the lives of those who live in his buildings, to control the lives of the players, etc. Take away his ability to control using his money and all he can do is accumulate for nothing of substance, he can't buy what he wants most.

He is a terrible human being, one of those that makes me sad to be a part of the same species. No one should ever want to do business with him again. But he is allowed to be a racist asshat. You don;t steal from someone because they are a racist. The league can take his assets, give him fair market value and never do business with him again. That is what they should do. anyone who wants to steal his money because of his views on race is flat out wrong. Its his money.

I have represented two different owners of NBA teams. These teams are not really investments but are toys for the ego.

It also sets a precedent for future owners to be so penalized for their actions. It's not about the money he'll make, that's a given since he's been a NBA team owner longer than any other person, it's about the legacy of shame he's earned.

If he wanted the money he'd have sold the team years ago. He wanted the prestige of being an NBA owner, and all the benefits that afforded him. That's all gone now whether he's forced to sell or not. This is why Mark Cuban is so nervous over Sterling's situation. If they do it one of them, they could do it to any of them when they act like Sterling.

I don't think Cuban is afraid of them taking his team away for being a racist, I think he's afraid of it being taken away for any other arbitrary made up reason.

He's had a fairly confrontational relationship with the league office, and he's worried about pissing too many people off and then they say fuck it, we're taking away your team.

He's never yet stepped over the line in the way Sterling did. But, I don't think he likes the thought of being censored in his actions beyond the petty (for his income) fines they've imposed on him in the past.

Oh, adjusted for inflation, naturally. But not that lavish CPI they use for Social Security, set it at the chained-CPI rate that Simpson-Bowles wanted to use. Oh, the delicious howling that would ensue: Subjected the wealthy to the same nostrums they prescribe for the poors.

Another scumbag billionaire owner who got richer when he was forced to sell the team he owned. Same shit, different year. Too bad we can't start a public option and issue stock and allow the public to buy the Clippers a la the Green Bay Packers.

Working for someone who holds them in such contempt.

Edit: I just saw a report saying the players were the driving force in compelling the NBA to act against Sterling.
