(12,482 posts)what little was known about the guy at the time. part of it was the Telegraph referencing a local tv station that had asked the neihhbors what they knew about him. And the answer was they (he and his gf) didn't fraternize with the neihhbors and he had moving boxes in his garage. In otherwords, his neig hbors didn't know him well. Not dispareaging, just part of "here is all we could find out about the guy everyone is talking about."

(12,482 posts)and it was exactly like I suspected, some local reporter filling up air time because she had been assigned to interview the neighbors who didn't know shit about him other than he was standoffish and had boxes.
the way it is bandied about by Snowdenistas implies he was actually attacked (disparaged) by someone over the boxes. he wasn't until today, that we know of.

(12,482 posts)A local tv reporter was sent to go interview the neighbors and find out everything she could. And that appears to have not been much- they kept to themselves and had a garage full of moving boxes. This local TV report was used by the London Telegraph which was picked up by politico in their round up of what was known about him. All ths at a time when reporters are scrambling to find out all they can about the most talked about but unknown guy on the planet. It is a triviality but hardly a disparagement.
So, no.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,303 posts)about how it's not what 'most people' would do. And multiple reporters passed it on, with a straight face (as opposed to taking to piss out of the neighbours and reporters who thought it worth saying or writing down, which was the general reaction when it was printed).
Yes, it's disparaging.

(12,482 posts)It is just as I suspected. Some local TV reporter mentioned some boxes once upon a time and "and he has boxes in his garage" became the Snowdenista Remember the Alamo as someone actually ever gave a fuck about boxes in his garage.
My OP doesn't say find were someone "mentioned" boxes. It says "disparaged" Snowden over boxes. And it never happened regardless of how cute some people think they are saying it.

adjective: odd; comparative adjective: odder; superlative adjective: oddest
different from what is usual or expected; strange.

(20,317 posts)When someone makes such a flawed defense, it shows that their agenda overrides their sense of reason. It demonstrates that they're so anxious to defend a certain position that they aren't even evaluating the arguments they're throwing at it, and probably aren't worth listening to-- at least on that topic.
So people tend to remember it.

(30,439 posts)The pilot was recorded saying he had to land because of fuel gauge issues.
The pilot was not ordered to land so that Austrian authorities could search the plane for Snowden. The whole brouhaha started because people thought Morales was forced to land over Austrian airspace because they thought he had Snowden on board.
It turns out air traffic control recorded the pilot saying they had to land because of fuel gauge issues.
The entire story was thoroughly debunked.

Government Overreach. Let's talk about that. Government Overreach is the issue.
Violation of the 4th Amendment. That is the issue. If you have a warrant that allows you to collect data on 12 million people, you don't have 12 million suspected criminals - you have 12 million people that you are trying to turn INTO criminals if they do something you don't like.

(27,670 posts)"and he had boxes in his garage!", as a phrase with which DUers who believe that NSA spying is detrimental to democracy often use as a cliche, to mock the various silly, ludicrous arguments used by supporters of the MIC, who were/are angry at Snowden for revealing that the corrupt NSA was/is conducting illegal blanket spying activities.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022983957
The phrase is a nuanced implication widely understood to have the meaning described above, and so, has become a cliche that represents the juvenile arguments of those whose unwavering loyalty to the status quo compels them to blindly defend the MIC from any and all criticism and attack. Their general MO is to lash out at anyone (particularly whistleblowers) who would question or expose the actions of our oligarchical rulers, and their hired official representatives.

arely staircase
(12,482 posts)The politico story was a round up of what little was known about the guy. Among thos things was the neighbors that told the local tv station that he and his gf standoffish and had moving boxes stacked up in entrance to their garage. Why the emotional investment in defending the man against imaginary assaults on the order or lack thereof of his garage are astounding.

(101,303 posts)and you've replied in it many, many times. The person in the thread who cares about this the most it you. You are denying the obvious - having boxes in the garage was listed in the paragraph 'unfriendly neighbor'.

How is that propaganda?

(44,113 posts)Didn't hear the Putin radio show. Did Snowden ask a follow up question? Or did he just take Putin,s word for it.
Some folks at DU are fact based, other folks are more intrigued with sloganeering. Of course I am painting w a broad brush. But if that was a crime at DU, there would be no DU'ers.

(13,340 posts)... Perfectly legitimate foreign intelligence operations. Those caused very real harm to US relations. Many Snowden supporters just respond that we shouldn't do such spying, but that is naive in the extreme.
Also Snowden is perfectly content to offer himself up as a propaganda tool to Putin. If Snowden ever REALLY was a threat to Putin, he would come down with a nice little case of polonium poisoning.

(36,437 posts)By the volume of these Snowden Defense Committee posts that want to really talk about anything - please Dear Gawd, ANYTHING! - else
Whatever one might think of Snowden's other actions, it's near impossible to defend his decision to abet Putin through that hackneyed and ill-conceived propaganda stunt. That Putin is in the midst of annexing yet another portion of Ukraine and is engaged in vital dialogue with the US and NATO on that issue makes it particularly difficult to defend, and that's not even touching on the matter of Putin's ridiculous domestic record as a petty autocrat.
If Snowden was serious in his questioning of Putin, he appears for all the world to be an utter fool. If he was instead playing along with Putin's nonsense, then it's rather more despicable. Those are the only two readings, and the Snowden Defense Committee knows it, so we get these thousand and one "Oh yeah? Well what about X?" posts.
He's embarrassed his supporters rather badly with this one, as is clear enough.

(30,439 posts)which focused on a local reporter who asked his neighbors questions about Snowden.
The neighbors simply said a few things including the fact he had boxes piled floor-to-ceiling in his garage for the entire six months he lived there. I really didn't think anything of it at the time and I certainly didn't disparage Snowden over having boxes in his garage. I've got boxes in my garage.
I guess I always assumed there were DUers that actually made fun of him for having boxes in his garage, but it looks like nobody on DU did.
So the whole notion that people here made fun of him for having boxes was invented out of thin air.
