Art for Good Friday

[IMG][/IMG]

The Taking of Christ by Francisco Goya

I love this lesser known work by Goya. The resignation in Christ's face and his vulnerability, the hushed tone, the open mouthed cry of the man behind the soldier and tender light renders this this scene unforgettable. This was part of a Challenge I did on the Art of Good Friday and I was thrilled to be able to re-visit it so I could post it for all of us, not just those in deep observance of Good Friday. I hope you have the same thrill in this beautiful painting, which really deserves more attention that it usually gets.

That's one. Second, went to the Metropolitan Museum today, and got a little lost (imagine that!) and wound up in what I guess is a storage area just above the big room in the American Wing. Amazing amounts of stuff in glass cases, most of it only id'd by their numbers. They've got glasswork in those cases that is ridiculously beautiful. Just blew me away. A few people were wandering around in there, but not a lot. Tons of folks by the Egyptians, tourist groups hogging Washington Crossing the Delaware, natch, but in there, peace, quiet, and tons of stuff.
Makes you wonder what's in their basement, attic, under the floorboards, wherever.

I am shamed to admit I probably didn't see it when I was there...the Prado is huge...and I was running ragged going through that vast museum to see all of the Velasquez, Goya and etc...

Spain changed my life, actually...the art was so maginificent I was entranced...I will go back and seek out those southern cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, and also explore more in Barcelona...

... in 2008. They had a special exhibit on Goya while we were there. But Wikipedia says it is currently in Cathedral, Toledo. And I assume that is the one in Spain and not the one in Ohio.

The El Greco painting of it does it disservice (I detest El Greco's works, personally). I was so impressed with the sheer physical beauty of the town...
