1. Today's decision wasn't about corporations, it was about spending by individuals.

5. And that proposed amendment doesn't do that, as it only concerns corporations,

and wouldn't affect or undo today's decision.

6. So... You Have A Problem With This ???

Our Ultimate Goal:

To restore true democracy in the United States by pressuring our State Representatives to pass a much needed 28th Amendment to our Constitution which would end corporate personhood and publicly finance all elections in our country. There are only 2 ways to amend the Constitution. (1) Go through our federal government (2) Go through our State Legislators via an Article V. Convention of the States.

7. I see following the links to the '28th Amendment' that it includes more than was just on the

'petition' page. But it still isn't a full amendment. I would like to see a full
proposed amendment to understand what is specifically being proposed.

BTW The Michigan legislature last week called for an Article V Convention
http://www.michiganvotes.org/2013-SJR-V
(although they want to limit it to a balanced budget amendment).

24. Just for the record

My comment was in support of you and against the person denigrating the OP. Limiting corporate contributions would be a really good thing to do. Yeah, it doesn't support what the SC decision was about, but it's a really good step to take. The idea of fighting against it because it doesn't do everything strikes me as wanting rainbow-farting ponies.

19. Today's decision means that a millionaire who molests his own child (if someone like that

exists) could spend tens of thousands of dollars in a local judicial races to punish or reward judges according to the judges' treatment of the millionaire in court. I am assuming that this ruling will apply to local and state races eventually.

It means that small donations to a candidate from real, working people who earn their money honestly can be overwhelmed by the huge donations of criminals who have earned their money dishonestly -- illegally.

It makes a joke of the idea of one person, one vote.

28. Actually, no it doesn't

I'm not supporting the ruling but I think we need to be accurate about what happened...

1) This was a ruling on FEDERAL election laws, not State or Local.

2) This limited the AGGREGATE contributions a person can make, not the CONTRIBUTION LIMIT for each race.

32. I haven't read the decision, but thought it was about speech rights.

I realize that a federal law was overturned, but wouldn't the determination that speech rights reach political donations ultimately suggest that state laws could be invalidated?

Do you have alink to the decision?

And aggregate contributions can affect individual races although it is less likely that they will in local and state elections. The aggregate contributions can buy what used to be called a machine, what has been called a slate.

And, yes, it will mean that a very wealthy crook, say a child molester, could have inordinate influence on an election and even get himself elected. It already happens and could become more likely.
