Ted Cruz asks his Facebook friends about Obamacare, gets an earful

The Olympiad of officials and institutions reaching out to the public via social media and not hearing what they expected has a new champion: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

Back on March 24, Cruz posted an informal survey on his verified senatorial Facebook page. It read: "Quick poll: Obamacare was signed into law four years ago yesterday. Are you better off now than you were then? Comment with YES or NO!"

It's probably fair to say that he didn't expect the tsunami of "YES" votes that have shown up on the page among the 47,000 that Facebook says have been posted.

Respondents have listed, among other things, their newfound ability to obtain coverage despite preexisting medical conditions, the right of young adults to stay on their parents' policies to age 26, lower premiums and the end of lifetime benefit limits.

Some posted impolite remarks about Cruz's personality or political positions. And some -- rather tactlessly, we thought -- observed that Cruz himself isn't subject to Obamacare. He gets his coverage through Goldman Sachs, where his wife is an executive. But the general tenor of remarks is that the Affordable Care Act is a good thing, that Cruz should get out of its way already and that, if anything, he should be working to improve it, not overturn it.

When I last checked around 5:00MT, more than 48,000 posters responded to the poll. Folks, some see lots of humor in the Cruz page being inundated with people responding

YES, they are better off with Obamacare. But trust me, this is not funny...go and read the personal stories these folks are sharing - and read the amazingly few negative or uninformed responses which are quickly corrected by other posters. This is not some AstroTurf poll or a paid advertisement. These are real people pouring their hearts out about what it means to finally have affordable health care. I challenge everyone on this website to go to the poll page, spend some time reading what folks are saying, and save your favorites (including the negative responses) so we can capture this incredibly important outpouring from the public. The page could be taken down at any time, so please do it NOW! Hint - responses are not chronological - so click on the option for "recent activity" to read the most current reports, as well as starting from the beginning. Let's Go! Peace, Hannah

On Monday Ted Cruz, in anticipation of the impending doom of America–something the rest of us would call the Affordable Care Act signup deadline–posed a question to his idiot followers on Monday. It was the tried-and-true drumbeat of the Stupid Party, an attempt to capitalize on the words of the President to whine about Obamacare.

Unfortunately for Cruz, when he asked, “Quick poll: Obamacare was signed into law four years ago yesterday. Are you better off now than you were then? Comment with YES or NO!” Cruz was surely not expecting what happened next: ACA supporters flocked to the thread to express exactly how deluded “Green Eggs and Bullsh*t” really is. Pages and pages of comments in support of the President’s signature law flooded into Cruz’s page:

The Tea Party crusade against the Affordable Care Act (ACA) hit a huge snag this week. On March 24, 2014, Texas Tea Party Senator, Ted Cruz, decided to put up a ‘quick poll,’ about the ACA on his facebook page. Problem? The Koch brothers don’t control the conversation on social media, the people do.

Ask a question, get an answer.

The question Rafael ‘Ted’ Cruz asked on facebook was simple. Are you better off now than you were before the ACA, also called Obamacare, was signed into law, four years ago?

Nearly 40,000 comments later, the resounding answer from people all across the country was YES.

People love the ACA.

People who responded to the question cited different reasons for saying that they’re better off since the ACA went into effect. Some pointed out that the ACA has saved them money, reduced their monthly premiums, and lowered deductibles and co-pays.

A large number of those who responded to Cruz’s ‘quick poll,’ said cited the ACA that prevents insurance companies from dropping people with a preexisting condition.
