Hot mike moment: Obama overheard telling Medvedev he needs 'space' on missile defense

By NBC News' Shawna Thomas
SEOUL, South Korea -- It was a comment not intended for public consumption, and another lesson for President Barack Obama on the importance of being careful about what you say around microphones, especially in an election year.

At the end of a 90-minute meeting between Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday, journalists rushed in to hear remarks from the leaders about the content of their talks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Journalists spied the two leaders leaning close together and talking in hushed tones. According to those in the room, the conversation was difficult to hear but the videotape revealed Obama asking the Russian leader to wait until after the November election before pushing forward on the topic of a planned missile defense shield.
Obama: This is my last election…After my election I have more flexibility.

Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

While most journalists didn't catch the rest, one Russian reporter managed to record the context with his equipment.

Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it's important for him to give me space.

Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you...

Obama: This is my last election…After my election I have more flexibility.

Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

This looks like something the "liberal" media will blow out of proportion and make it sould like Obama is giving away the store.

1. Romney just issued a statement on this

criticizing Obama for wanting to wait until after the election to clarify his policy. Romney said this is no time for the President to pull his punches and he should reveal to the American public what he intends to do on the subject of missile defense.

That's rich coming from Romney, a man who has gone through countless debates without giving any specifics whatsoever about how he will govern on any issue if elected and who intends to erase all his previous positions like an Etch-A-Sketch and looks forward to doing so because of just how vague he has been on each and every issue.

The same goes for Shamtorum, Nitwit Newt, and that cult leader. None of them have offered any plans on ANYTHING. The whole controversy they are trying to gin up over this "open mike" business is complete bullshit. This missile defense system is far from the most important thing with which the President has to deal right now. I don't give a rat's ass if he puts it off until after the election. I care more about the 14 million of us who want and need jobs, and whether or not I can sell my house if I choose to do so, and whether or not I can survive getting sick without going bankrupt. Quite frankly, I wish he'd just axe the whole useless project. Talk about a waste of money. The damn thing doesn't even work.

but Romney is behaving just like Sarah Palin did after her disastrous interviews when she cut off all political interview shows except for Fox News worship programming. Even a softball throwing ass kisser like David Gregory can't get Romney to go on his Fluff The Meat program, despite making requests that Romney open himself up to an extended interview.

This seems just like the kind of "hintity hint hint" that some people need.

"This is my last election…After my election I have more flexibility. "

Right wing: Either means Obama is going after a full-bore Marxist agenda OR (and this is the one I'm going to tease my right-winger friends with), it's a clear statement that he intends to impose martial law and will direct the giant Obama Army to round up "conservatives" and lock them away in all these FEMA camps that we don't seem to hear about anymore, not because the claims are unfounded but because the Obama Admin has been censoring the media....hyuk hyuk...

Left wing: Obama is finally going to start moving left and implementing some of the more progressive bullet points on the "agenda".
