What Is Posted on DU Doesn't Stay on DU.
That's something a lot of us don't think about much. But, when you post something on DU, it's searchable on Google, and Google likes DU a lot. If you start a thread on DU in GD or any other public forum, you can search for your thread title a few minutes later and, if you put the title in quotation marks, it will be the top result in the search results page.
That's because Google constantly watches DU and ranks things posted here pretty highly. We're a popular website. If you post something that is unique or emphatically worded in the body of a thread, that will also show up in a Google search, if you use those unique keywords. Sometimes, if you type something extraordinary and if you are well-known outside of DU, that extraordinary thing will be found and posted on many other websites. Once that happens, what you wrote has the potential to go viral, if it is extraordinary enough or if you're well-known enough. Most DUers aren't well-known, but what they post here can still be found on Google. You can see this for yourself. Just Google your own screen name. You'll find all sorts of things you wrote on DU in the search results, unless your screen name is very common. If you post a lot on DU, lots of results will show up. Usually, some of what you wrote will show up as well. If it's unusual, striking, or out of the ordinary, it's sure to show up. All of this is to suggest that thinking about what you post on DU is worth doing a little. It will be searchable and connected to your screen name for a long, long time. In some cases, it may appear on other websites, including some websites you may not particularly care for or that don't represent your views. That's more likely, of course, if you're a well-known poster on DU. Then, it might show up on websites that dislike DU and what it represents very much. It could even go viral in ways you won't like. It's good to consider what you write here and to think before clicking the "Post" button. Once you do, Google will find it and so can anyone else. It can be embarrassing at times, as I have learned myself. Being embarrassed by one's own words isn't much fun, which I've also learned. From learning that, I've learned to reread what I've written before posting it on DU. If you want to see how it works, go to Google and search for this, including the quotation marks: MineralMan "Paul Ryan is an absolute Poopy-Head." Wait a few minutes from the time I posted this thread, and you should find it right away.

1. Its not just DU.
Its word strings which are linked to.
To confirm just pick any news item for example in any source you please, pick a random a string of say 10 words and then search that string. You'll find the news item you used. |

2. interestingly, back in the early days of DU googling "mike_c"...
...linked mostly to my DU posts, and taught me at least the concept of internet posts taking on a life of their own. At least one person that I know used google searches of my DU user name to check out my recent internet activity. Now though, googling "mike_c" turns up many folks who are not me. Something to be said for a common user name!

but I just have to say, is this what I'll be doing when I retire? LOL
It's bad enough I spend time on DU when I could be, oh, I don't know, maybe exercising or cleaning closets or something, but now I'll have another excuse not to do those things. I can Google llmart to see what gems I've posted in the past decade. All kidding aside, llmart is so remote from my real name that at least no one that I know in my real life would have any idea it's me. |

And they will never ever get the concept of "right speech".
If they had lives, they would be doing something positive or at least neutral instead of attempting to destroy people. I've run into a lot of people who enjoy attacking and lying about others. I used to work with lawyers and judges, and a lot of them are NOT nice people. |

188. So check this out. I posted last Friday about my Mom having a stroke and after
googling my screen name I found "The conservative cave" had a thread about me.
One of the posts was this: "Yet another DUmbass I have absolutely no sympathy for. I hope her mother never recovers and the treatment drains every last cent from her family, leaving them destitute and in utter poverty." It amazes me that some people can be so sociopathic. "http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php?topic=95474.0 Oh and I would like to add, in case this "whatever" sees this that my mother bought long term care insurance many years ago after listening to Suze Ormond. So all her Medicare co-pays are already paid for. Too bad for you. |

I was shocked to read this article the other day, about how colleges are hiring data collection firms to keep tabs on potential and actual applicants: finding out what they've google searched, discovering things about their parents' finances and ability to pay, etc.
And if you're thinking of just blocking all this kind of information, my guess is you'd probably be in just as much trouble: a student (or job applicant) with absolutely no online presence is likely to be viewed with a hearty dose of suspicion as well. College admissions offices mine data on prospective students
Internet opens avenues for campuses to recruit, scrutinize applicants Institutions are turning to "big data" companies such as Hobsons, Oracle and Ellucian to be their Match.com. The trove of data allows recruiters to mine social media interactions, Internet habits and the socioeconomic standing of a student's parents, experts say. ... While this digital trail can lead to a perfect fit, some observers worry about a darker side to all the information, especially if it's scooped up without proper context. A student searching online for information about eating disorders might raise a red flag for a school, but the reality could be the student is simply researching a school paper, said Nora Ganim Barnes, director of the Center for Marketing Research at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. No one knows how many schools are data-digging, "but most simply don't want to admit it," said Barnes. "And most people don't think of college as a product to be marketed ... they hold academia to a different standard." ... To reduce the rejection, technology can also assist in with something called "demonstrated interest." By feeding every contact — every email, phone call and school visit — into the right software, schools can foresee who is most likely to say yes to an acceptance letter. Customer relationship management software can cost up to $100,000, but considering travel and other expenses, colleges can quickly recoup their investment — especially when admissions offices are being asked to do more with less, said Dana Hamerschlag, a vice president for Ellucian, a Fairfax, Va.-based technology firm with 3,000 higher education clients. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-college-admissions-data-met-20140317,0,2327274,full.story |

38. What I got from this article ...
is that they can even see what your Google searches have been (and see to whom you've been emailing things). That means, essentially, you're hacked. So I would suppose they could trace what has been posted to DU from your computer.
But I'm a complete idiot about this stuff, so anyone, feel free to disabuse me of my notions. To me, this is way more worrisome than the NSA data gathering. It has immediate, real-world consequences--like not getting into a college or being rejected from a job--as opposed to theoretical consequences that would obtain only if and when a heinous despot would decide to use the metadata to some nefarious end. And I've figured, if we get a heinous despot in power, we're screwed anyway. They don't need metadata to wreak havoc and evil. |

If they can tell what you're searching on Google, they are not just out there looking for your name. They are inside your computer.

153. It's a good reason to guard your personal details closely.
Not everyone needs to know that your last name is Kaddiddlehopper and you live on Primrose Lane in Anytown, USA, your spouse is named Val and your adorable little children, Eunice and Petunia and Egbert all go to the Fartsmeller Elementary around the corner on East Toenail Blvd. They don't need to know that you work at Bunga Bunga Electronics as a Quality Control Supervisor, what your exact salary is and when you go on vacation, who your mother is, and where you bank and have a mortgage--yet this kind of stuff I see here all too often.
People here often get too detailed in their revelations. It's not needed. You can give people a sense of your reality without getting deep down in the weeds, and you'll protect your family as well. |

12. Meh, I don't care
My name is anonymous. And I don't post very private stuff, it's just not something I would do. I don't think people should post real private stuff about their personal lives, because as I have noticed, the info is not just used by right wingers on other sites, but it is also used "as a weapon" by other duers themselves, if they happen to not like another duer. But that is my own opinion, others feel differently.
I tend to post about things that I don't care about others knowing about, mainly trivial happenings when it comes to my personal life, if I do post it at all. Let's just say I am very aware and conscious of privacy, and it is part of my nature. I may be even somewhat too secretive by nature, to be honest. |

28. A little experiment, Mineral Man:
Type in your Google search box:
"Bare Naked Working Girls" ...and let me know what comes up first in your hits. I believe that Google somehow checks our posting history, search history, cookies, and whatever else available and organizes results around other factors that are unique to your computer. Are you leaving DU open in one tab, and Google searching in another tab? That might tell Google to search site DU first. "Bare Naked Working Girls... Up Close & Personal" was a Photo OP about our Bee Colonies I posted to DU in 2007. When I Google Search for "Bare Naked Working Girls" the first hit in MY Google is to my post at DU from 2007. 136. It all hinges on the the question "who owns information about ME?"
To which the answer is (IMO) "I do."
In our current environment, various corporate entities collect data on my behavior (on the Internet, shopping for groceries, applying for credit, etc.) then turn around and sell it to other corporations without my knowledge or consent. In the case of credit reporting, this can have serious consequences for me if someone makes a mistake. I should have a say in what happens to information about me. We need two bills: a Consumer Privacy Act, and a Citizen Privacy Act, that prevents opportunistic and unwarranted data gathering. |

Apparently, that particular phrase is unique to your posts. In quotes, Google will find it, and no others. That only the DU posts showed up means that there are no other instances of that phrase anywhere else.
Uniqueness trumps all if you put your search between quotation marks. Search without them, and you'll get different results. I just checked, and your posts are nowhere near the top of the search results. It's the quotation marks, which tell Google to look for that exact phrase and no others. |

When I wrote my truth about Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R), I intended for it to be carried far and wide, and it was. Her Wikipedia page even was changed because of it. lol.
Recently I have been having looks at the CC site and I am amused to discover how closely they monitor DU. They even collect histories and photos of DU posters. I have been visiting DU daily now for 13 years and they know far more about DU members personal lives than I do. Now there's a bunch of ne'er-do-wells for you. |

The thread on the conservative cave on this thread is up to six pages and their feelings are very very hurt. They are evidently proud of their goats and resent us mentioning these carnal relationships with their goats.

There are lots of people trying to figure out who various people are who are active on the Internet. I've had incidents in my own private life because of it. I have since abandoned all efforts to remain anonymous, and such stuff has ceased. But that's a different issue, altogether.
Few people actually manage to maintain their anonymity if someone is seriously trying to find out who they are. People leave clues all over the place, without realizing it. |

but why spend so much time reading what conservablogs are writing? There are thousands of other ways to find laughs. There are thousands of other ways to use the time and energy that's otherwise being wasted. You're giving away your personal power.
It's like posters here who put others on ignore, then log out to read what they say. Being so obsessed with what someone/group, whom one claims to abhor, is writing about gives control to them. They want a rise and they're getting it. They want to manipulate, and they're succeeding. They want to control, and they're doing so even in a small way. Why satisfy those cravings? |

First, you can look at the conservative cave site without the need to take a shower. I have trouble looking at the free republic site without needing a shower.
Second, the posters on the conservative cave are really really stupid and are fun to laugh at. Right now, the posters on the conservative cave are stalking or targeting me because of my posts on this board. I have been invited or dared to join their silly little site which is really very amusing. Third, I enjoy watching the reactions of the idiots on the conservative cave when DUers laugh at their posts. The conservative cave idiots are too clueless to realize that they have nothing to contribute to the discussions on this board and they really do not understand the issues being discussed. The reactions of the members of the conservative cave to the posts on this thread are very very funny. The idiots on the conservative cave do not realize how funny their posts are and why I find them to be so amusing. Finally, I agree that it would be a waste of time to register for that board. The posters on that board are simply too stupid and poorly read to have a discussion with. The concept of debating the idiots on the conservative cave on any issue would be a complete waste of time. ![]() |

DU is a good outlet. If a poster is aware of SEO and how to use it well, DU can springboard things pretty well. Google loves DU, like it does many popular websites, and sends its robots here on a continuous basis. Anything posted here is in Googles database within about five minutes. |

who may not think about such things. Anyone who is very familiar with how the internet works already understands it, so it's not aimed at any particular person. The association you have made is coincidental, although I know what the association is.

91. I'm well aware of this -
and until very recently kept DU isolated from anywhere else I appeared online (as a rule, I use separate logins everywhere - so I never use my facebook account to login to any other online account, for example - but I have been even more careful with DU; I also have separate photo hosting accounts which I use solely for DU, etc.) I know that someone intent on finding out who I am could still do so, based on the content of what I post. Some of it is relatively unique. I'm just making something beyond trivial.
I decided very recently to post something here I had posted elsewhere under a different name, knowing it would be trivial to connect the two for the very reason you note. Using phrases from that post (or the other places it is posted), only one or the other is pulled up in each search, but never both. Very interesting. |

95. Watch out for those photo hosting accounts.
If you hotlink to photos in them, the URL can be seen easily. That's something people often don't realize and it's one of the commonest methods used by people who are trying to figure out who someone is.

I'd imagine that Will is aware of this, that he has zero problem letting others outside DU know his opinions, and accepts that as part and parcel of his craft. I think Will realizes he's not anonymous, and doesn't mind others reading his opinion pieces... regardless of whether those pieces raise the hackles of the dogmatic mind, or simply gets forgotten as quickly as its read.

The idiots in the conservative cave are so clueless that they think that their comments on their own board have an effect on what is posted on this board and that DUers care about what they think. It is really very cute. These idiots lack any self awareness or do not realize that the only reason people like me go to their boards is to laugh at them. The idiots posting on the conservative cave are still really upset that one of their fellow idiots posted on this board and was tombstoned in short order.
The idiots on the conservative cave actually think that they are capable of understanding the issues discussed on DU and that they can contribute to these discussions. It is really very cute that they think that they can contribute to any discussion or that anyone would care about their opinions. I really enjoy laughing at the posts on this board. That was the reason I began the thread, despite opinions to the contrary. It was prompted by another thread, but was not about that other thread or the person who posted it. Like many of my thread starters, something that occurred prompts me to post something much more general. Not everyone on DU is an Internet expert. Not everyone on DU knows exactly how deeply Google looks into every website on the Internet. Sometimes, a reminder is appropriate, as I felt it was in this case. |

192. Why would DU do that?
The commentary and discussions on DU represent our opinions. In most cases, those opinions are very worthwhile and worthy of being widely disseminated. Many people post here with the expectation that what is posted here is seen by a wider audience than just DU. If DU used a robots.txt file to block Google from putting DU threads in their database, DU would be useless as a venue for discussing political issues and spreading those discussions.
Part of the reason that DU has any influence at all is that it's a public forum. My OP is just there to remind people that they are writing in a public place. Even if they use screen names that are actually anonymous, what they write is attached to those screen names, and screen names are generally less anonymous than people think they are. |
