Scott Brown Confounded By Republican Who Benefitted From Obamacare

DYLAN SCOTT MARCH 20, 2014, 10:10 AM EDT

It seems Scott Brown, the once (and future?) U.S. senator, didn't have an answer when confronted with one of his fellow Republicans who has benefitted from Obamacare.

The Huffington Post flagged the Wednesday story from the Coos County Democrat. Brown had met with Herb Richardson, a New Hampshire Republican state legislator, as Brown is exploring a run for the state's U.S. Senate seat.

During the meeting at Richardson's home, Brown called Obamacare a "monstrosity." But Richardson and his wife quickly interjected, according to the Democrat, saying that the law had been "a financial lifesaver."

After being injured on the job, Richardson had been forced to live on workers compensation for a while -- a situation so costly that the couple eventually had to move out of their house. They also had to pay $1,100 a month to keep their health insurance. But now that the Richardsons have signed up for health insurance through Obamacare and qualified for a tax subsidy, they're paying $136 a month for a plan that covers both of them. "Thank God for Obamacare!" Richardson's wife Rita said, according to the Democrat.

The Huffington Post contacted the reporter, Edith Tucker, who wrote the story. She said Brown didn't interrupt the Richardsons' praise for Obamacare and didn't react when they finished with their story. "Brown) did not (respond)," Tucker said. "You could be sure, if he had, I would have written about it."

12. Who are the bright bulbs in the Republican party?

They've pretty much become a twisted carnival of Tweedle Dees and Tweedle Dumbasses growing stupider by the day. They certainly are a frightening group of folk.

28. The only "bright bulbs"

I can think of in the GOP are Jon Huntsman, Michael Steele, and Steve Schmidt, but as we can see, none of them really have any say-so with regards to how the party is run.

11. Scott Brown and the rest of the Repugs will probably just call

Herb Richardson, a Taker like the rest of us.

So what if Herb was driven into bankrupcy because of an injury he sustained at work. That's what Repugs call, "Taking one for the Makers".

And so what if he had to move from a 12 room house to a trailer in order to keep his Health Insurance. Now he's starting to sound like a whiner. Your 12 room house isn't a God given right protected by the Constitution, Herb. You've still got your right to own a gun. What more does a true Amurikan need?

21. Sheheen is going to rip Brown's guts out. She is a tough adversary in that state.

She was elected Governor two times before she ran for the Senate. She broke the republican ironclad hold on the Governor's chair of New Hampshire, since she did that, the state has elected only Democratic Governors.

Scott Brown is absolutely right. Obamacare is a disaster...for the GOP. It's gonna work and their resistance and fear mongering are gonna backfire on them.

23. "Scott Brown gets an awkward lesson about Obamacare"

Scott Brown isn't the only resident of New Hampshire who got an "awkward lesson" about Obamacare.

Brown found that out on Saturday, when he stopped by the home of Herb Richardson, a Republican state representative. Sitting in Richardson's home, Brown called Obamacare a "monstrosity" that members of Congress didn't even bother to read before they passed. At that point, according to the Coos County Democrat, Richardson chimed in to explain that the law had been a "financial lifesaver" for him and his wife. From the piece (page 14 [pdf]):

Richardson was injured on the job and was forced to live on his workers' comp payments for an extended period of time, which ultimately cost the couple their house on Williams Street. The couple had to pay $1,100 a month if they wanted to maintain their health insurance coverage under the federal COBRA law.
Richardson said he only received some $2,000 a month in workers' comp. payments, however, leaving little for them to live on.

"Thank God for Obamacare!" his wife exclaimed.

Now, thanks to the subsidy for which they qualify, the Richardsons only pay $136 a month for health insurance that covers them both.

24. Brown owns a house and some property in NH

That doesn't make him a Granitehead, just eligible to run for an office.

If he's planning to run on "Obamacare Baaadddd" in this state, that tactic has all the flight path of an anvil. With a few exceptions most people here are just getting by. Help is appreciated and welcome.

29. You're welcome, Cha.

Another thing, Shaheen is well liked here. Attacking her may not work. Brown will have to offer more than negative. Graniteheads tend to be serious and fairly sophisticated about politics. Further, they have little tolerance for bs, as he just found out.
