"These assholes always get away."

Those words: "These assholes always get away," were spoken by George Zimmerman during the 911 call that he made as he stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin moments before killing him.

These assholes.

What assholes?

The ones who were always getting away. Zimmerman had made 46 calls to 911 regarding people whose behavior he did not approve of since 2001. It does not seem to have occurred to him that he was not the police, or that he was a nuisance. Or that maybe following people for no good reason was inherently threatening, or that he had no business minding everyone else's business, let alone trying to stop a 17-year old boy for reasons unknown....just because these assholes are always getting away.

What assholes?

If by "asshole", you mean someone doing something they have no business doing and making life generally worse for other people, well, it is a damn shame they so often get away. Isn't it? Aren't there a bunch of people out there with that very thought in mind? Don't you know someone yourself, who always seems to be thinking that very thing? These assholes always get away?

You know who is the asshole? George Zimmerman. People like him. People who can't mind their own business. People who think everyone is a suspect. People who can't empathize or use the damn brains in their heads to do anything but try to divide the world up into "good guys" and "bad guys". People who'd rather see someone dead on the ground before they would bother to see them as human beings.

Who is the asshole?

People who are the reason we can't have nice things. People who would cry up and down that some asshole, somewhere, is getting some shit for free they aren't even entitled to--like their right to walk on the same street in a gated community while black as other people, which is all I can think Zimmerman saw when he thought Martin looked suspicious and out of place. Maybe that wasn't it--but I do know one thing--he saw an "asshole". And that wasn't the only words he used.

These assholes always get away is like the shithead answer to everything. Someone, somewhere, is getting away with something, so let's kill what's good. God forbid anyone get away with anything. Someone might be voting fraudulently. Someone might be having non-procreative sex. Someone might even be enjoying themselves. Assholes. Someone on food stamps might have piece of steak. Someone, somewhere, has off-the-books income to stay afloat and they don't even report it. Some one, somewhere, is an asshole, and other, uptight assholes, the kind with guns or firebombs, just want to make sure no one gets away with anything.

There are assholes who would stick a probe up a woman's lady business and torture her for a couple of days before they'd let her get away with [strike]having sex, being a woman, or being fertile[/strike] seeking the medical care she has determined is best for herself. There are assholes who would take away the right to vote for the old, the poor, and minorities because they don't want people to get away with those voting preferences they know they have.

These assholes always get away. With what? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

I'm feeling massively curmudgeonly right now. Fuck an asshole who would murder an innocent boy. Fuck a system that would let the murderer damn near get away with it. Fuck our human tendency to go looking for assholes, and to screw over every person in the world just because of a few possible, even imaginary, cheaters. It makes me more than mad, and a bit of an asshole, myself.

1. The biggest problem that I still have with this whole thing is that Zimmerman

was obviously a minority, he was Hispanic as far as I can see. Apart from racial intolerance, why the hell would he pick on an innocent young man like Trayvon?

So many people have been/ will be impacted by this blatant act of stupidity that there are no words to explain it.

2. I think it comes down to his expectation that somewhere out there: someone was guilty of something--

and it didn't matter what. He viewed the world as a place full of crime and bad people; I think that's why there were all those 911 calls. He was always on the lookout for someone doing/being wrong. Trayvon was African-American so in Zimmerman's mind (and although I know I have an awful lot of white privilege, I kind of see how racism can be internalized even in people self-identified as/viewed as POC) he was at least suspicious. I don't know that race was the first thing on his mind, so much as the idea that there was someone out there he wanted to get. Some asshole. I just don't doubt race played a part in his deciding why Trayvon Martin was the person he stalked and killed that day.

3. I have lived in a minority community for many years - prejudice is not something that is reserved

for whites only. All of us have someone we think of as less deserving. Of course it is not right but it happens.

I once sat in a sociology class regarding racism - just a couple of days after I had returned from Wonded Knee in 72 - what the prof was trying to get across to us was just that. He asked us to think back to our childhood and about who it was that we did not like then. That class was the most profound one of all of my education. I found out that I was not perfect and the rest of the students did to.

6. He stalked Trayvon because he was black.

Simple.

Everyone has potential to be racist against any ethnic group of which they are not a member. There's no 'ethnic solidarity' for those who minorities harbor prejudice against other minorities as Zimmerman does.

That's the claim his father is trying to make in a weak attempt to make him seem more sympathetic. His history of 911 calls shows his true prejudices.

4. He was projecting. As it appears Zimmerman is the *sshole getting away

It really is too bad the cops let him get away. I have been wondering if the PD was also involved in some way in the tragedy. I guess we'll never know for sure.

5. I truly enjoyed reading this OP. It was

cathartic for me, speaking to much of the rage and despair I feel for that boy and his family. Thank you.

Peace

7. Thanks.

I wondered if "asshole" was too much, but the way I feel about it, it's like there is almost not language strong enough.

8. The usage was perfect. You used his own

words to show who the real asshole is. Nicely done and appreciated

9. Right wing "leaders" have worked very hard to convince people that those "assholes" are getting away

with the very "crimes" you describe. They are very good at what they do, those right wing "leaders."

10. Kick-ass post!

You sum it up perfectly.

Your post brought to mind a C-Span caller on Washington Journal
I heard about a year ago- it haunts me still, that call.

A vicious woman who was convinced she saw a
family buying an outrageous meat platter at her market
with, "GASP...FOOD STAMPS."
How DARE they?

REALLY? Are people that ugly?

After listening to Zimmerman on that call,
as he stalked a child with the intent to murder
that child, and the caller on C-Span who was
SPECULATING that the family was using
food stamps to buy food - I guess so.
