(11,649 posts)night i had dinner with my friends. he's jewish. she's not. i was talking about knishes. she asked "what's a knish"? i couldn't believe it. they've been married for 8 years.
i'm not jewish but i'm a former new yorker. she's from colorado.
MannyGoldstein
(34,589 posts)Knishes, bialys, and pastrami.
Oof, this is making me hungry!
DesertFlower
(11,649 posts)she had a corned beef sandwich and chicken soup. her husband and i had matzo ball soup with our sandwiches. they had knishes there. had i known i would have showed her one. she knows what bagels are. not sure about the bialys.
i'm in knish withdrawal. gabila's in L.I., NY had a fire back in october. the machine that fries the knishes was damaged. i just read that they finally got a new one. right now there's a country-wide shortage. about 6 years ago they started to carry them here in phoenix in the freezer department.
BTW. the nearest deli is 23 miles each way. oy vey. the only thing i miss about new york is the food. we lived in a predominantly jewish neighborhood. there were 3 jewish take out places within walking distance.
another funny story. my friend in new york is jewish. her husband is italian. when they had their son's bris she had it catered kosher. in comes her mother in law with a huge box of canoles. her son rushed her into the bedroom where they hid them under the bed.

(92,469 posts)Grandparents was Jewish, I had lots of food from the delis around Beantown and any city we lived near in New England during my childhood. I loved knishes with pickled green tomatoes and matzoh. But I have always had a thing for most pickled veggies, meat an fish, not so much... actually not at all!

And you can get them at the local kosher deli here, but they aren't exactly New York style.

(34,589 posts)I've never known a Jew to be hung up on Leviticus. I'm sure there are some loopy ones, but the bizarre Leviticus fetish seems to be more of a christian fundy thing.

(92,469 posts)loooong before I could sneak up on a heap of Lutefisk!! That stuff is eweewww! And you know it when you get close by the fishy aroma. Nothing helps that stuff, other than a jar to put it on before you throw it out.
Now gefilte fish, if you have to eat fish, isn't so bad.

(51,401 posts)This is frozen, and from the ingredients statement it looks like a fish meatloaf. They give you instructions for simmering this thing with vegetables, but I think it would be pretty good (yes, I know this is gefilte fish!) if you baked it.
Autumn
(46,169 posts)Cause I really like those. Mainly the ones in hot sauce. On edit, I see it isn't. I may have to try that though. It does sound good and has almost the same ingredients in my Mothers salmon loaf.

(5,858 posts)that there is a line between cultural foods and racism.
For what's its worth, growing up in the deep south, and as a reform Jew whose congregation was instrumental in civil rights protests, I try to have as much sensitivity as possible, but even I'm at a loss as to how to draw the line.
There is no question in my mind that watermelon has significant racist connotations. Fired chicken, greens (mustard, collard, etc.), gravy, etc. were seen as southern, but not racist. That being said, a lot of people of all races eat and enjoy both foods.
Would I see a traditional Jewish meal served as part of of Holocaust remembrance as antisemitic? No. That being said, traditional Jewish foods aren't identified with antisemitism. On the other hand, I would have much greater suspicions with teaching Dreidel games using gelt during the same remembrance.
