President Obama Says 'We Can' Stop Bullying In New Cartoon Network Special
If you caught Cartoon Network's anti-bullying video on Sunday, you undoubtedly recognized the man who introduced it: President Barack Obama. The 25-minute video, "Stop Bullying: Speak Up Special," features victims of bullying sharing their personal stories of being harassed by friends and peers.
"By the end of this program, we hope everyone realizes that bullying is not a rite of passage or a harmless part of growing up," says President Obama. "It's wrong. It's destructive. And we can all prevent it." The President continues to briefly highlight how his administration has taken action to combat bullying and raise awareness about the issue. As a motivator, he adds, "Everyone has to take action against bullying."
Watch the video here, and let us know your thoughts. We found it quite painful to watch kids detail the effects of being called names like "fat," "stupid," "loser," "ugly" and "fish lips" as well as suffering physical assaults stemming from their physical characteristics.
"Stop Bullying: Speak Up Special" aired just days before the acclaimed documentary Bully releases on March 30. Yesterday's special isn't the only anti-bullying work by Cartoon Network. The website dedicates an entire section to "Speak Up," where users can take the pledge to help stop bullying and watch other related videos.
