I think I would try to have some kitty treats to offer the cat... hopefully distract him
for the few seconds it takes to slide the mail in.

At least the carrier has a sense of humor about it. Maybe the cat was trying to grab it from him and then again, maybe it just thought he was playing.

I once owned an enormous black cat who loved the daily mail deposits. It was the high point of his day to grab the mail as it appeared in the slot, and yank it out of Tony The Postman's hand. Fortunately, Tony got a kick out of it, too.
