I was one of the harshest critics here of the maddeningly awful healthcare.gov site. I have a master's degree in Instructional Design and Technology, so I have some related experience, and I could write a very long article on the many usability and other healthcare.gov issues (many even when the site is working as apparently planned.) I spent many, many frustrating hours on the site and on the phone with their CS reps and with healthcare "navigators". My blood pressure may never be the same.
Also, as an advocate of Medicare for all, I can find plenty of fault with the ACA.
However, I am extremely happy to report that starting this month we are saving $644/month on our premiums, and the coverage is basically the same. We now have an Independence Blue Cross Keystone HMO Silver Proactive Health Insurance plan. A small subsidy is helping keep the new cost low.
I'm not going to give any more personal details, so if anyone wants to doubt my claim, I understand. But as for me, I'm a believer.

(12,325 posts)Somewhat to the effect that were in a big ship and to make a big change you've got to do it slowly in small increments to get to where you want to be. I know that's hard for liberals and Democrats to believe but despite Republicans and some blue dog Democrats gumming up the works he's got a lot done.

(9,974 posts)They had both been without health insurance for the last few years. They were previously insured under her work insurance, but she lost her job a few years ago. He's a self employed carpenter, and they just couldn't afford insurance on just his income. They are skeptical that the policy is as good as it sounds for the great rate they're getting, but I see no reason to doubt that.

(303,446 posts)President Obama was practical on getting ACA through Congress and SCOTUS.. and seemingly now it can't be repealed unless our country is taken over by teabaggers.
But, hopefully it can be a strong foundation for even better health care in the future. Social Security didn't start out as good as it is today.. nor Medicare. So there's strong hope for getting what we want for everyone in the future.

not so happy for myself. I, too am an advocate of medicare for all. I am uninsured. My state did not expand medicaid, therefore, health insurance premiums for me (silver plan) are over $500 a month. $6,000 a year, I can't afford that, that's close to my housing fo a month. I'll take the fine. Fuck my republican governor & anyone who voted for him.

(9,298 posts)Let's see what the playing field looks like in another 6-8 months when people like you realize your state is getting the shaft. Well, not you because you knew the score beforehand. But word of mouth will spread, people will demand it, Rethugs will gradually cave and more will become covered. I believe the goal is 7 million by the end of March which is a good start.
You may have meant "Medicaid" rather than "Medicare" not being expanded, right?
Hang on, hang on - it will happen. You WILL be covered.
Dark & Stormy Knight - good for you!

(52,196 posts)all the people who are insured who weren't and who are not being bankrupted by an illness are so positive. Single payer will come. In the meantime, the hemorrhaging is stopping.
