Northern U.S. in Freeze as Airlines Recover From Storm

By Brian K. Sullivan and Mary Schlangenstein - Jan 22, 2014

Much of the U.S. Midwest and Northeast will remain in a deep freeze until at least the weekend as airlines work to restore normal schedules after a record-setting winter storm.

Temperatures in New York, Boston and Washington won’t reach above the freezing point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit (zero Celsius) until Jan. 25, while Chicago will have readings 8 degrees or more below that mark until Feb. 1, according to AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania.

“The advancing cold will be severe enough to bring life-threatening conditions, hypothermia and the risk of frostbite to areas from the northern Plains to New England,” Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, wrote on the company’s website today. “The penetrating cold has the potential to cause water main breaks as far south as the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic and to freeze pipes into parts of the South.”

The cold follows on the heels of a snowstorm yesterday that left record accumulations for the date from Washington to New York City. The wind and snow prompted more than 4,500 flight cancellations yesterday and today, according to FlightAware, a Houston-based tracking service.
