Russell Johnson: The Professor From Gilligan's Island Dies at 89
The actor who played the Professor in "Gilligan's Island" has died ... TMZ has learned.
Russell Johnson, who played Professor Roy Hinkley, died of natural causes at his home in Washington.
Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, just posted on Facebook, "My 2 favorite people are now gone. The professor past (sic) away this morning. My heart is broken."
The other person who died is Bob Denver, who played Gilligan. He died in 2005.
Johnson was on the show from 1964 to 1967. Johnson was not in the original opening of the show. He and Mary Ann were referred to as "The rest." But Denver insisted that they be included and that happened later.
Wells went on: "Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and 'the rest.'"
---
The only surviving members of the original cast are Mary Ann and Ginger, played by Tina Louise.

Dave Madden: Reuben Kincaid In 'Partridge Family' Dead At 82
Dave Madden -- who played "The Partridge Family's" aggravated band manager on the 1970s TV show -- has died after a long illness at age 82 ... TMZ has learned.
Madden played Reuben Kincaid on the show ... who was often bedeviled by the antics of the Partridge kids, particularly Danny, played by Danny Bonaduce.
Dave's former agent tells TMZ ... he died of congestive heart and kidney failure early this morning.
Madden also appeared on another popular 70s TV show, "Laugh-In" and was the author of a couple books, including a book of memoirs published in 2007.
We're told Madden died in Florida ... where he lived with his wife.

(7,720 posts)Gilligan's Island was an after school favorite. We could not go to the movies on Friday nights because my best friend was such a big fan of the Partridge Family. I bet he still has all of their albums.

(17,199 posts)What time was it on? It must have been on late.
From what I remember "The Brady Bunch" was on at 8 PM and "The Partridge Family" was on at 8:30 PM and then I had to go to bed. So I didn't see "The Odd Couple" until a few years later, when it was on in syndication.
edit: OK, based on what you wrote, it must have been on at 9:30.

(7,720 posts)7p to 10p. The movies were at 7p and 9:30p but we were not allowed to go to the late show until a few years later. The movies cost .50¢ for age 12 and under.

(37,573 posts)It says "Johnson was on the show from 1964 to 1967."
I am pretty sure the show was on the air all through the 70s. It came on every day at about 4:30 PM.

"The show enjoyed solid ratings during its original run, then grew in popularity during decades of syndication, especially in the 1970s and 1980s when many markets ran the show in the late afternoon after school."

Because I am pretty sure I was not watching it is October 1964 when I was just two years old.
I think like Star Trek, Gilligan's Island was not a hit in the 1960s but gained popularity in the 1970s through syndication. I too watched Gilligan's Island in the 1970s, in the afternoon after coming home from school.

(2,097 posts)The show was produced 1964-1967, and was then syndicated. The period in which it was produced is considered its "run." You wouldn't say that Alan Alda was on M*A*S*H from 1972-2014, just because you can still see that show in reruns.
