Jon Stewart Crushes Fox News In The 2011 Ratings »
By losing 9% of their audience in 2011, Fox News prime time lineup now averages fewer viewers than Jon Stewarts The Daily Show.
According to TVNewser, Fox News averaged 1.868 million total viewers in prime time compared to 2.3 million for The Daily Show.

The audience erosion continued over at Fox News as the network lost 8% of its total viewers and 14% of their viewers in the 25-54 demo. The total number of daytime Fox News viewers slipped to 1.073 million.
Red Eye was the only Fox News show to post ratings gains in 2011. Bill OReilly, Sean Hannity, and On The Record With Greta Van Susteren all lost viewers. In the morning, Fox and Friends remained flat. Fox News still showed its dominance by having the top 13 rated cable news programs, but a certain program hosted by a comedian that Fox News loves to hate on Comedy Central blew past most of the Fox News shows in the ratings.

According to Comedy Central, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart averaged 2.3 million viewers per episode in 2011. Unlike Fox News, The Daily Show was up in total viewers (+7%) and all key demos: adults 18-49 (+6%); men 18-34 (+2%); men 18-24 (+4%). The Daily Show was also the top cable late night talk show in terms of total viewers, and was generally dominant. While Fox News was losing 14% in the demo in 2011, Jon Stewart was gaining 6%.

(25,928 posts)I'd wager that a good 25% of their 'viewers' are captive audiences in nursing homes.

That imperative explains why Limbaugh kept talking about Sandra Fluke for so long. He was boosting his TSL to compensate for his dwindling market share. Few things boost TSL like getting the old folks agitated over how much sexy sex these shameless young hussies are having nowadays. (And make no mistake: Limbaughs audience is very old. One station manager quipped to me, The median age of Limbaughs audience? Deceased.)

So this seems reasonable. After all, they're just really counting cable boxes turned to Fux News, right?

(53,661 posts)There's the mushroom growing theme, which describes Faux Newz pretty well:.
Keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em bullshit.
Few things native to this beautiful planet equal the utter depravity of the GOP mouthpiece, FNN.
Please watch this clip and tell me the difference between this huckster and the typical FNN pundit or GOP candidate:
Personally, I think John Carpenter nailed it.

(3,190 posts)Steadily drop year after year, because their core audience is dying out...quite literally. Plus I think a lot of younger and middle-aged viewers are starting to realize the schlock faux and other "news" outlets have been peddling and how it just doesn't jive with reality.
TDS is the perfect antidote...it's funny and entertaining, as well as being quite informative.
I will go as far to say that Jon Stewart is one of the best interviewers on the teevee. I just got done watching the extended interview Jon did with Grover Norquist on CC's website. As much as Grover makes me want to hurl, Jon's interview with him was a thing of beauty. He asked very intelligent questions and allowed Norquist to speak his point of view without cutting him off and over talking him, followed by intelligent follow-up questions...you know, like a real interview should be conducted. You could tell Grover was quite nervous during the interview, like he realized he was up against a real intellectual heavyweight who wasn't going play any games with the truth.
Needless to say, Jon calmly and expertly demonstrated why his hard-line "no tax pledge" was ridiculously hypocritical, unrealistic and damaging.

(8,556 posts)First off, you're comparing one program to an entire network. Second, how much are the two even directly competing? Fox's audience is older and conservative, Stewart's younger and liberal. I think Fox is primarily competing with the other news networks, while Stewart's main competition is probably shows like 'Conan' and 'Adult Swim.' How many viewers are facing an 11pm Sophie's choice on whether to watch the re-airing of Bill-O or the Daily Show?
The ratings gap between Stewart and MSNBC is probably even more than the gap shown here. That comparison would probably be slightly more significant too, since there's presumably more overlap between the MSNBC audience and Stewart than between him and the Fox audience.

(2,444 posts)His show is awesome, but he's gotten super political (and FOX focused) and I fear people (who aren't so politically in the know) might tire of it or write it off as a left version of FOX (though with Comedy). He had a woman on last nite that did a sort of comic skit and it seemed entirely too scripted, very political....not good. John Stewart's strength is in his nuance. I hope he doesn't lose it.
I'm interested in what others think.
I've watched FOX some, but it's gotten REALLY bad. Seems to me it spends the ENTIRE day ripping on Obama and democrats.

(14,173 posts)Especially if they actually mention him (or imply him so as to not credit him). They trashed the idea of the left using comedy shows to make a point. He fights back with a little more vigor when that happens.
I love that FAUX News is caught between a rock and a hard place on this. If they mention his show, they give it free advertising, and viewers may just think they should check it out to see what their FAUX friends are talking about.
But most times they must be told to bite their tongues and shut up about him for the above reason, knowing he just ripped them the evening before. They must absolutely HATE not punching back all the time, especially when their usual MO is bullying those that don't even deserve it.

That just means more Americans are getting more truthful news reporting from a declared fake news service - The Daily Show.
