What I learned from the Duck Dynasty story

If you are conservative, there is nothing you can say that will have repercussions. We saw that already with the likes of Limbaugh, Beck, Palin et al. But it even works for a minor reality celebrity.

And if your hateful words come from the Bible, you are praised for your forthright values.

On the other hand, if you are liberal and you choose a poor way to castigate a former half-governor for saying something truly idiotic, you are done.

1. I learned that the media and many people do not care about racism unless certain language is used.

His disgusting homophobia generated headlines but his ignorant, racist mutterings were swept under the rug.

6. He's not ignorant; that's what's really awful

The Duck Dynasty guys are not genuine hillbillies. They are millionaires with college degrees. The whole ZZ-Top-in-camo shtick is strictly for TV, and they didn't look like that before they went on their program.

But having done my grad work at an Ivy League school, I know that even college-educated millionaires can make incredibly biased and stupid statements about people they consider "not our kind."

9. Yup. This was pure marketing.

Does he believe what he said? Maybe.

I truly believe that people like Rush, Hannity and O'Reilly are only chasing money. I have heard Keith Obermann say that Hannity is incredibly nice and generous off-camera and the he (KO) is believes it is all an act of Hannity's part, once the camera is on.

Always ... ALWAYS ... follow the money. Amongst Conservatives, greed and wealth is the prime motivator for actions/beliefs. Some will even set racism aside if it means making a buck.

2. Soon as we get everyone to quit following that silly book

People won't have it to use for cover anymore

Shame it's going to take a couple hundred more years for the Western World. I think it's going to be around 1200-1400 for the Middle East though unfortunately.

8. There are 613 commandments

Picking just one out of 613 isn't biblical justification, it's just an excuse for his bigotry.

3. TV is propaganda, they sell whatever they can to people dumb enough to fall for it

There's no humanity involved, it's pure cash. They sell torture camps, fake wars, bigotry, poisonous foods and products; they don't care at all about anything but money.

Most of the people who still watch and believe TV are getting what they deserve, a massive amount of for-profit disinformation that serves no public interest.

5. People expect liberals to have values and morals.

So there are consequences.

People expect conservatives to yell about values and morals but no one expects them to have them.

11. Wrong! It isn't about anything except money

...and how mediocrity will stoop to any level to draw attention to itself in lieu of having something of value to offer. I mean, how many times have we seen this already and we're still not getting it?

Most entertainers on the MSM have marginal or little talent at all, their popularity comes from expectations rather than performance. That includes the writers, who without the boost of publicity would see their creations on the dollar rack in the bookstore.

You can sell people cow dung in America and make them like it with enough hype. TV shows, plastic junk made by Chinese serfs, political discourse just to name a few.

12. I tweeted and emailed A&E the link to the video where Phil is preaching about marrying 15 year olds

I heard no word from them.

What it comes down to is that A&E wants to generate the millions of dollars from its cash cow before it overstays its welcome (which will be soon, I hope).

13. I watched Duck Dynasty after the dust up...

...I was curious about the show.

I couldn't believe how bad it was. So horrible. It's obviously scripted. These guys are put in "shucky darn our truck is stuck in the mud!" scenarios and it's obvious--from their forced lines and reactions--that the whole thing is just set up.

It's uninteresting. It's boring. It's not even entertaining. And I'm not a tv-snob. I love television and watch quite a few shows.

This was so boring.

The conclusion that I draw is that bigots and religious zealots will tolerate anything--as long as the show validates their bigotry and hatred. They'd be glued to their sets if toddlers playing with sock puppets were spewing ant-gay lines and scripted lines that glorified their ignorant, disgusting mentality.

Frankly, I have had it UP TO HERE with this shit. I am watching a segment of our population turn into rabid, stupid piles of mush who are being led around by the nose by malignant narcissists such as Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. They HATE liberals. You should hear how they discuss us. We hate America. We are awful, horrible people who want to destroy this country. We hate families.

This is a cancer on our society. No doubt, it's being ginned up and propagated by people who benefit by a divided country--that is broken and unable to rise up against the real oppression (Facists, corporatists and warmongers). However, it's getting so bad, that I hate them too. I'm not proud of that, but I'm sick of neighbors and community members--who are supposed to be friends--HATE half of the population because Glenn Beck tells them to do so.

I can't deal with this any longer. I'm about ready to dump Facebook. I see neighbors and high-school friends "liking" Duck Dynasty quotes. A Facebook friend posted a meme that read, "The reason liberals don't like Phil Robertson is because he stands for what they are against--faith, family and morals." Yep. We're all horrible animals. It's utter lunacy!

19. So did I, as one channel after another turned to mindless, obviously fake

garbage. Anything that's intelligent and worth watching turns up on DVD, iTunes, or streaming eventually.

Shows like Duck Dynasty remind me of what Studs Terkel said about Ronald Reagan when he spoke at a college where I taught:"He made it OK to be stupid."

The six corporations that own all the TV stations want the stupid people to stay stupid. Putting Duck Dynasty, Honey Booboo and other such banal shows on the air validates the nation's stupid people.

If you've lived long enough, you have noticed that young people tend to imitate what they see on TV. If the children of stupid people see such programming, they will think, "We're just like the people on TV--cool."

16. I think this will fall back on them.

Come election time, there's plenty of ways to put these quotes out there to steer the youth towards the left. That's where our future is, the youth vote. They claim to be trying to get it, ( and the black, female, and gay vote ), but then they fall into holes of their own making like this one.

We should put this ugly piece of redneck shitslop up front and center next election.

22. Where does the biracial grandson fit into all this?

I wonder what he thinks about him. And the 'adopted' foster child. Haven't seen the old dad comment.
"I've done a lot of cool things in the past couple of years, I've been to Super Bowls, I've met Presidents -- but the best decision we ever made -- that made the biggest impact on our life was the adoption of our son Will."
