http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/14/rick-santorum-puerto-rico-mitt-romney_n_1345728.html
In an interview with El Vocero newspaper, Santorum said he supported Puerto Ricans' right to self-determination regarding the island's political status.
"We need to work together and determine what type of relationship we want to develop," he told the newspaper.
But Santorum said he did not support a state in which English was not the primary language.
"Like any other state, there has to be compliance with this and any other federal law," Santorum said. "And that is that English has to be the principal language. There are other states with more than one language such as Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal language."

(12 posts)There is a dominant language. It is English. We may be a diverse bunch in America, but can you at least agree that having a common tongue is more beneficial than not? If PR wanted to be included, then yes, I agree with Santorum that the goal should be that its citizens know English. (By the way, I am Puerto Rican!)
YellowRubberDuckie
(19,736 posts)...But at the same time English is a very difficult language to learn. I think in order to be a cohesive country it needs a common language, but I don't like the asshole-iness these Republicans pull putting that out there.

(10,237 posts)She, her immediate family, her extended family and the family friends we met when we visited Puerto Rico a few years back can ALL speak English better than that little shit has ever spoken in his life.
It amazes me how often racist dipshits like little ricky think that speaking more than one language is a sign of ignorance.
I truly hope that little ricky is the nominee so that President Obama can mop the floor with him from coast to coast.
PEACE!

(66 posts)Almost all Puerto Ricans speak English.
This guy is an idiot.

(10,237 posts)...claimed he had very poor English. What he had, in reality, was just heavily accented English. While he preferred Spanish, he did qoite well with his English.
My wife and her brother and sisters speak English when they're together but Spanish when my Mother-in-Law is present. My Mother-In-Law's English is prety good though.
BTW, Ziggystrange, your Spanish looks to be pretty good. At least it's better than mine!
PEACE!

(66 posts)I can't take the credit. My dad was a diplomat. I went through Kinder-garden, and 1st grade in the Dominican Republic, and 2nd through 7th grades in Puerto Rico. Lived in Venezuela for a while. Then I had Spanish and French in HS here.
My first wife is from Brazil and did not speak a word of English, it was all Spanish until I remembered Portuguese which I had learned at 4 yrs old and forgotten. I'm learning Russian from my 3rd wife.
"My wife and her brother and sisters speak English when they're together but Spanish when my Mother-in-Law is present. My Mother-In-Law's English is prety good though. "
That is very cool, and common. In my house you are always hearing at least 3 languages, we made a deal to speak different languages to the kids. I speak English, my 84 yr old mother speaks Spanish, my wife speaks Russian to our 16 yr old. It can get confusing but the funny thing is the dog is the one that understands what everyone is saying. LOL.
Peace, and long live multiculturalism.
