Boston firefighters are responding to a smoky, three-alarm transformer fire in a garage adjacent to the Back Bay Hilton. Boston officials warned people to avoid the area as the power went out in buildings in nearby streets; they also advised people to avoid inhaling the smoke that poured through the streets.

The fire was reported at 6:27 p.m. in the garage on Scotia Street, around the corner from the hotel. The building is separate from the hotel and houses two very large transformers. The fire was burning in a 115,000-volt transformer, the fire department said.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke after responding and a second alarm was ordered, the fire department said. A third alarm was ordered as heavy fire appeared, the department said at about 7 p.m. in official tweets.

The department transmitted pictures of smoke and, later, flames pouring out of the vents in the wall of a building around the corner from the hotel.

This is one where rubberneckers need to stay far, far away. Even the press needs to grab their money shot and get the hell out of there.

I hope the firefighters have adequate tanks and masks.

Is plastics. If he can afford to, get away and stay away. These are very toxic fumes.

If my editor told me to get in to get photos...I'd say no.

Tell him to stay safe.

He died from inhaling toxic fumes from the burning transit car materials. Cyanide gases, if I remember correctly.

I might risk pepper spray, which is nuts with asthma, not plastics.

Three alarm fire, though, in bldg or garage adjacent to the Back Bay Hilton. Scary.
