Over a decade ago we purchased this image from PhotoDisc (now Getty Images) for about $20...
And used it on the T-shirts we gave to DU donors...
But if you zoom in a bit...
And give it a little photoshop magic...
Apparently it's now worth around $100,000!
EDITED TO ADD: just noticed that this seems to be getting a lot of attention so I wanted to add that it was Skinner who spotted the similarity between the images in the office this morning, I then put the post together. Credit where credit's due!

Those low feedback bidders? That's GZ, or his buddies, driving up the bidding with dummy accounts.
It might sell for over $100k, but that doesn't mean that he will get the money.

(2,124 posts)Is if eBay charges him a percentage of the final price AND forces him to pay that fee, regardless of who "wins" the auction or whether or not GZ actually got paid.
Oh, and then bans him from eBay due to his false bids. That's important, too.

(115,652 posts)I sent him a couple questions, ranging from mocking to very polite and he hasn't put them up for viewing. Also, if you click on a bidder, most of them that is all they have bid on, leading me to suspect either zimmy is bidding via another account hoping to drive up the price, or people are making false accounts to bid with and never pay. Unfortunately, Hugh Moran (my fake account) can not bid unless he enters a credit card number or I would be messing with it also.

I don't know what George did ... Nor does anyone on here really ... Did he print it out and paint over it? Did he hand paint it by hand and eye. Did he print out just the outline or grey scale of it and paint over that? Then he added some kind of stenciled lettering.

(3 posts)Problem is, they never DO anything.
I went a step beyond live chat and contacted a friend who used to work in the eBay security offices in Utah, to let them know about a flagrant shill bidder. It was someone I knew personally, so it wasn't a suspicion - I knew exactly which accounts were being used to shill bid. If you looked at those accounts, it would show 100% activity with this one seller only, in categories ranging from Barbie dolls to currency to records, you name it, and that 100% specific to one seller activity went back for years on each shill account. Even at that personal versus call-center-in-outer-Bangalore level, their interests lay solely in the direction of making more money off of that seller having auctions (and if he shill bid them up, eBay made even more money). Ebay has recently cloaked the handles of bidders (look at the bid history on this auction and you'll see), and eliminated the click-on-the-bidder option, to make it even more impossible to detect/report shill bidders. Ebay, in short, simply doesn't care. And they're constantly tweaking their site so they can employ the zero punishment policies that keep lining their pockets, while allowing them to eliminate departments that exist only in name, like "security".
This auction is no exception, as all eBay cares about is getting their cut of whatever ludicrous sum this thing ends up fetching.
The only way eBay would pretend to care otherwise would be if the media embarrassed them enough. But don't waste your time thinking eBay's "customer service" or even "security department" gives a chit.

(115,652 posts)In photography and the illustration industry, it refers to a copyright license where the user has the right to use the picture without many restrictions based on one-time payment to the licensor. The user can therefore use the image in several projects without having to purchase any additional licenses. RF licenses can not be given on an exclusive basis. In stock photography, RF is one of the common licenses sometimes contrasted with Rights Managed licenses and often employed in subscription-based or microstock photography business models.[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright
Copyright is a form of intellectual property (as patents, trademarks and trade secrets are), applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.[1] It is often shared, then percentage holders are commonly called rightsholders: legally, contractually and in associated "rights" business functions.[citation needed] Generally rightsholders have "the right to copy", but also the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.
Copyright initially was conceived as a way for government to restrict printing; the contemporary intent of copyright is to promote the creation of new works by giving authors control of and profit from them. Copyrights are said to be territorial, which means that they do not extend beyond the territory of a specific state unless that state is a party to an international agreement. Today, however, this is less relevant since most countries are parties to at least one such agreement. While many aspects of national copyright laws have been standardized through international copyright agreements, copyright laws of most countries have some unique features.[2] Typically, the duration of copyright is the whole life of the creator plus fifty to a hundred years from the creator's death, or a finite period for anonymous or corporate creations. Some jurisdictions have required formalities to establishing copyright, but most recognize copyright in any completed work, without formal registration. Generally, copyright is enforced as a civil matter, though some jurisdictions do apply criminal sanctions.
Most jurisdictions recognize copyright limitations, allowing "fair" exceptions to the creator's exclusivity of copyright, and giving users certain rights. The development of digital media and computer network technologies have prompted reinterpretation of these exceptions, introduced new difficulties in enforcing copyright, and inspired additional challenges to copyright law's philosophic basis. Simultaneously, businesses with great economic dependence upon copyright have advocated the extension and expansion of their intellectual property rights, and sought additional legal and technological enforcement.

(11,975 posts)I felt it was similar to a paint by numbers. Essentially, not an authentic original project....now my suspicious are confirmed.
BodieTown
(147 posts)...I would manipulate the original in Photoshop to create the final blobby painted effect, to use as the pattern. I'd distort and skew some of the elements, to change it from "exact copy" to "original" (to the untrained eye).
There are a number of ways to project an image of the "original" onto a wall/canvas (projector, "lightbox" mentioned by somebody else here, 35mm slide and projector). You would then just paint away...and take great care NOT to stay within the exact lines of the projected image.
I'm no expert, but I've been working with graphics for 14 years; I could easily modify a photo to look like GZ's "original".
Oilwellian
(12,647 posts)Walmart can also transfer it to canvas. I would imagine that's the route he's taken. Thanks for responding.
BodieTown
(147 posts)Those photo transfers-to-canvas do not use latex paint. If he painted over said transfer, that would be a huge and amateurish mistake for a professional con man.
I'm betting he used a projection of some kind.
Mariana
(14,734 posts)In this case, the unbelievably huge and amateurish mistake he's made is stealing the image in the first place. It was completely unnecessary. He could have taken a cheapo digital camera out and taken a bunch of pictures of flags flapping in the wind until he got a picture similar to that one. Even with no photography skills, if you take enough pictures you'll get a good one from time to time, just by sheer chance. Then it would be his own and he could modify it any way he wished and sell it legitimately. He stole the picture because he was too lazy to go out and get one of his own.

(8,514 posts)Last night, when I saw the post about him selling a painting, the first thing I did was go through Google images, to find the painting he copied it from. Couldn't find it, but you did!
I'm an artist, in my spare time, and I knew that asswad couldn't come up with a painting resembling reality without a modicum of time to learn how to paint. So, he's a plagiarist, besides being a murderer. Figures.

(147 posts)...painting or writing words in the fashion of an old typewriter, complete with serif font, would be the quite natural option for a beginner painter.
This makes my head hurt.

(11,258 posts)... it's likely that, not only is he lying about it being his "original" work - he doesn't even know what it is he's selling (i.e. it's not a painting - it's a digital print on canvas). Either he knows full well what this canvas is (and he's lying), or the person who made it for him is conning him (and he's a fool).

It really is disgusting. I hope this story makes it to the news media although the morons who actually support him, probably won't care, sadly. If they can condone murder they won't be too worried about theft.

(7 posts)Zimmerman's artwork lends new meaning to minimalism. Zimmerman's talent is minimal (to non-existent); his artistic vision is minimal (to non-existent); the amount of thought and effort he put into his 'creation' is minimal (to non-existent). He even aped the words he includes in the work. About the only thing even remotely clever about it is how he positioned the word "God" so that he could imply under. What I have to wonder is if he didn't cut off the last portion of his creation which clearly needed to read "including Trayvon Martin".

But here, seems to me Zman is pretty much acting as a self-employed "artist" (albeit a worthless POS "artist" catering to the white wing) and would not only owe income tax, but likely FICA.

And so far, the media hasn't realized this fraud.

(8,028 posts)A: It's regular old household latex gloves and used condoms, melted down and applied with a blow torch. I know its not the fanciest, but my materials were just laying around, if you know what I mean, and I needed to get rid of, er, put these visions onto the blank canvas as soon as possible while they were still pliable. Your friend, NYC_SKP @therealNewYorkCitySkip
Awesome work, NYC_SKP! I've always said, you're so creative! I've never seen anything like that. What is your muse? How do you just not burst with all of that creativity jumping out onto your canvas?...It fairly creates itself I'll bet... I know the real deal when I see it, and I see it in you. I fancy myself to be a patron of the arts. I'll give you $100,000 right now for that signed original!

(6,323 posts)I was checking it out another thread and totally thought it was traced over then painted. What can I say, I've been a paid media artist for 15 years. Can't escape the eye.
I hope the bidders lose a lot of money over this.

While I don't find it sad that a megalomaniac would post a bad Photoshop as original artwork on Ebay, I do weep that there is someone with $100,000 to waste on its purchase.
I guess money really is how untalented people keep score.

(54,770 posts)The ones I found disgusting would say, "I think Mr. Zimmerman is an awful person, but he had no choice but to shoot big bad Trayvon Martin". They totally ignored his choice to grab his gun, stalk an unarmed teenager, bully him, then shoot him center mass as he had trained to do, then told the police his lies (again as trained to do).
