(30,947 posts)and I hoped that food stamps would help supplement my meager income. But I was only eligible for $35 a month. I decided that small amount was not worth the trouble. But I may apply again because that little amount could buy my bread and eggs for a month.

(14,799 posts)The reason we didn't get them wasn't pride so much as not knowing
our way around
new to a totally different State than we grew up in.
I think if we had asked, someone would have helped us figure it out.

(37,573 posts)the one time I applied in 1995 I was told I had too many assets. Although my income qualified me for $100+ per month, the fact that I bought some land in 1987 for $4500 meant I could not get any. The thing that sorta burned me up was that I could own a $5,000 car and still qualify. At the time I owned NO car, and I still have never paid (or felt I could afford to pay) $5,000 for a car.
I owned that land until 2009 when I sold it for $22,000. I didn't really want to sell it, but they assessed it for $25,000 which raised the property taxes pretty high. My idea was to put it on the market for $25,000 and prove it was assessed too high after it didn't sell for a year. I guess the market proved me wrong.
So the land would prevent me from getting food stamps from 1987 until 2009 and after that the $20,000 cash would also prevent me from getting food stamps.

(10,942 posts)the family couldn't eat on my mom's earnings. I hated getting food stamps, but long ago I recognized how important they are to a working society.

(4,713 posts)who is 15 now. He was barely a year old & I had just left his dad who had used me as a human punching bag for about 4 years. I was about 20 years old & we lived in a house that we had to keep the power cut off to half the house bc when we would flip a light switch it sparked & sizzled from the switch to the light.
Needless to say I moved into a better apt & qualified for food stamps. However, they were cutoff as soon as my $100 a month in child support kicked in. Like that shit made a difference, but we dealt with it. I ran a paper route at 3 am with my son with me then worked a day job as well.

(23,156 posts)had food stamps existed back in the early 60's we would have qualified without a doubt. There were five kids at home, and mom was a nurse. Nurses did not make much money back then. Dad was not in the picture.
What helped a lot, as terrible as it was for a few years, was that we always knew things would get better for us. And they did.
When I was a sophomore in high school I had a Saturday baby-sitting gig that paid three dollars for eight hours. I used the money to buy groceries for the family.
My husband's union went on strike when the kids were pretty young. I immediately went to the assistance office and signed up for food stamps. I've been very fortunate to not need them after the strike was over.
