...were tuned in and watching at school, live, when it happened.

Just reading about it brings back that day. Terrible memories. And we were spared the worst, at least initially: We weren't huddled together en masse watching the launch LIVE like so many other schools were. Although 9/11 is debatable, I can't think of any other tragedy which little children were likely to see live as it unfolded, like the Challenger accident.

That was a terrible, terrible day. Thank you for the link. If I watch it, I doubt I could stand to with the volume on.

My mother yelled down to me about it and I went up to see it. My father worked at NASA since I was born (retired in 1999) and for some reason I took the space program personally. I work there now and still take it personally. It was a horrible tragedy.

There have been at least two amateur shots of the explosion that I'm aware of that have been on MSM. This clip, however, is from a position somewhere south of the cape, and captures a different angle from the more commonly known clips.

At least these folks knew something was wrong.

I was on the phone making arrangements for a trip to Europe when the office manager ran up to me and said that the Challenger had exploded.

I had just stepped back in front of the TV after working on my hair and make-up when it blew up. Right then, I said, "They're all dead." Even before the NASA guy said anything about a malfunction or explosion I knew they couldn't have survived.

Still makes me sad to think about it all these years later.
