But Can't See The "Long View"...Thanks for having the first part correct.
But I have a couple of questions regarding the "long view":
1) How long... is the long view?
Do I get to live long enough to see the benefits of the long view? (I turn 58 on Saturday) Does my immediate family, and their children, the children I taught back in the 80's, their children... their childrens children ???
2) How much suffering is incurred during the "long view"?
How many starve, get sick and die, get ripped off, lose their jobs, their homes, their marriages, their kids, their very own lives... DURING the long view?

Thanks in advance.
(And no, I won't provide the link... wouldn't want to get in trouble.)

I'll use a football analogy for #1 because it pisses people off.
If you are on your own 5 yard line and have the ball, you could decide to throw the bomb, 4 times in a row. After all, the fastest way to get to the other end zone in one play, is a successful bomb. And you might try it on one of the 4 plays, but generally speaking, you need to take a longer view. Trying it all 4 plays will probably fail. You'll need to include a few running plays. Maybe a few short passes. That takes longer.
The founders created a political system that is inherently slow. And to have success, you're going to have to include some running plays within that system. You are rarely going to get everything all at once.
You don't take the long view because you want to. You take the long view because the obstacles in front of you require it.
Does this mean that people suffer more than those of us on DU would ever want. Absolutely. Which is why most of us push for as much progress as we can get, and then work to mitigate the remaining bad situations as much as we can. And then line up, and do it again. And again.
The fact that you can't save everyone all at once doesn't mean you don't save as many as you can, when you can.

Time for a final push... for a more... perfect union.
Get money the hell out of politics.

(27,787 posts)But I think its going to take some time to get the money out of politics.
After Citizens United, the situation is more like the other team has the ball, and they are on our 15.
What we need is a "pick 6" ... a fumble ... a turn over ... a mistake. Which probably means a supreme court action that shifts things.

(10,942 posts)is insane. If people who have the purist mindset would understand that and act accordingly, the long view could come true within this decade. The most progressive change within the last five decades has come under the leadership of two Democratic Presidents that the purists are always seem to find something totally wrong with.

And we could have spent some money bloodying up his ass this round.

In fact... it appears he has more than a bit of "tacit" approval... from DEMOCRATS!
