oh shit...

David Suzuki warns that Japan could be wiped out and that North America's west coast could be forced to evacuate if the Fukushima nuclear facility falls in an earthquake. .David Suzuki has issued a scary warning about Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, saying that if it falls in a future earthquake, it's "bye bye Japan" and the entire west coast of North America should be evacuated.

The "Nature of Things" host made the comments in a talk posted to YouTube after he joined Dr. David Schindler for "Letting in the Light," a symposium on water ecology held at the University of Alberta on Oct. 30 and 31. An excerpt of the talk shows Suzuki outlining a frightening scenario that would result from the destruction of the nuclear plant.

"Fukushima is the most terrifying situation I can imagine," he said.

"Three out of the four plants were destroyed in the earthquake and in the tsunami. The fourth one has been so badly damaged that the fear is, if there's another earthquake of a seven or above that, that building will go and then all hell breaks loose. "And the probability of a seven or above earthquake in the next three years is over 95 per cent."

Suzuki said that an international team of experts needs to go into the Fukushima plant and help fix the problem, but said the Japanese government has "too much pride to admit that."

"I have seen a paper which says that if in fact the fourth plant goes under in an earthquake and those rods are exposed, it's bye bye Japan and everybody on the west coast of North America should evacuate," he said. "If that isn't terrifying, I don't know what is."

Suzuki's warning came as radiation from the Fukushima plant has been detected in northern Alaska and along the west coast, CBC News reported: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/radiation-from-japan-nuclear-plant-arrives-on-alaska-coast-1.2335668

3. "I have seen a paper which says that . . . "

Lots of papers say lots of things that turn out to be untrue. While the real risks of Fukushima should be addressed in an urgent fashion, "I heard from a guy" is not scientific commentary.

9. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post

but David Suzuki is not just 'a guy'. He is a well respected Canadian scientist that has interests in environment and a healthy earth. Among many other things.

Suzuki is not an alarmist, he is solid as solid can be.

23. Point is he said he saw a paper that made a claim.

Not disputing anything about David Suzuki, but this isn't his research, just something he saw that someone else had written.

It's hearsay. Even if one is inclined (as I am) to think Suzuki is 100% telling the truth, that doesn't help us evaluate the research and analysis behind the claim.

I am going to go with Occam's razor and take a guess that the one guy running around with his hair on fire is not an indication of general scientific thought on the subject.

25. You Realize They Are Going To Attempt To Remove The Rods From Unit 4 Soon, Right ???

Much more serious is the danger that the spent fuel rod pool at the top of the nuclear plant number four will collapse in a storm or an earthquake, or in a failed attempt to carefully remove each of the 1,535 rods and safely transport them to the common storage pool 50 meters away. Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years.

31. Aren't those rods held in the pool above the reactor the new ones?

That's the story I heard on why they're so dangerous. Spent rods could be removed with far less risk of contaminating the western Pacific.

I hear it was very popular in Japan, as in standing ovations, due to the respect to the genre. If Suzuki is right, there will not be any Japanese volunteers to pilot those Jaegers.

I'm biased. I love the East Coast too.

This is scaring me. My kid wants to go to Japan next year. I don't know what the hell to do. Everybody is so nonchalant about it.

Would an 'international team' have any idea what to do anyway?

part of some punishment we are having thrust upon us by some unknown force. I cannot believe all the things that are happening. I am beginning to wonder if I should get up and drink my coffee in the morning or take one of the suicide pills I bought in the Philippines some years ago.

35. Yes. My apologies. I think the thing that is bothering me the

most and I say it here, to you, a longstanding respected member with some trepidation is that things are now way too far out of whack to be solved or even attempted to be solved via the legislative process. The Left may be forced to read Teamster 1A quickly before even that becomes unusable.

Thanks for your post(s).
