Only one-quarter of Americans think that their own member of Congress should be reelected, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. That's a sharp departure from similar polls conducted before the government shutdown.
In the new survey, 25 percent of respondents said they believe the member of Congress from their district deserves to be reelected, while 47 percent said they did not. Another 27 percent said they weren't sure.
An NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, released Thursday, asked Americans if they would choose to replace every member of Congress, including their own. Sixty percent said yes. That's the highest fire-them-all figure ever measured on an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Other polls have shown congressional approval ratings at or near record lows.
Not surprisingly, the HuffPost/YouGov survey found that even more Americans would get rid of most members of Congress if they didn't have to make a choice specifically about their own. Only 11 percent said they think most congressional lawmakers deserve to be reelected, while 70 percent said most don't.

Most of MN State Senators and Reps are donating their pay during the shutdown

So BOTH of our MN Senators are donating THEIR paychecks during this shutdown to worthy causes (Al Franken & Amy Klobucher) DEMs care and it's more than just lip service, it's putting their money out there to feed those in need and support vital programs damaged by the shutdown.
AL FRANKEN
Just like in 2011 when we were faced with a potential government shutdown, I dont believe its fair that I should get a paycheck while hardworking Minnesotans are stuck at home, worried about paying their bills, watching as House Republicans hold our economy hostage.
So for each day the government remains shut down, I will be donating my salary to Second Harvest Heartland -- a great organization that works throughout Minnesota, providing vital assistance to families who would otherwise go hungry.
While the government is shut down, I believe giving my salary to charity is the right thing to do. And I will continue working as hard as I can to get the government up and running again.
AMY KLOBUCHER
The government shutdown is threatening our economy and causing real pain for many families. Members of Congress shouldn't be getting paid while our government is closed, and that's why I'm giving my pay during the shutdown to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. Lifesaving NIH medical research is being slashed during the shutdown, including clinical trials for kids with cancer, and it's just one reason the House needs to stop this irresponsible gamesmanship and pass the straightforward Senate bill to get the government open so we can focus on the work of the American people.

(87,926 posts)The danger is the usual: the misguided belief that there is no difference between the two parties or the two sets of incumbents. It serves the GOP to let that fester, because it ensures that the pain is spread to the Democrats, and we end up losing valuable people who are on our side (and that includes the Blue Dogs who come from red districts).
GOTV 2014, make sure there's really targeted advertising, and with some luck we can regain the House for the Democrats and not lose any more seats in the Senate.
