New book "Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country"

There's this new book Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country written by Canadian journalist Diane Francis. The right-wing National Post paper in Canada printed an excerpt. A columnist for that publication criticized/criticised the book. And CBC Radio's The Current interviewed Francis about the idea. From the National Post's excerpt:

The 9/11 attacks and the financial crisis that started in 2008 damaged the economies of Canada and the United States, and accelerated the decline of most wealthy democracies. Throughout it all, emerging economies, led by China and India, did not skip a beat. Between 2000 and 2010, they grew by an average of 6% per year, while developed nations posted an average of only 3.6%, according to The Economist’s “Power shift” report. By 2030, Brazil, Russia, India and China could overtake the U.S., Japan, Germany, Italy, Britain, France and Canada in economic size. And these seven nations, the original G7, cannot catch up because of debt, demographics, resistance to change and an inability to recognize and counteract the strategies of their rivals.

Nations in distress, and facing uncertainty, must behave like businesses and weigh all options; they must also think laterally and outside the box. The problem for Americans as well as Canadians is that foreign governments, and their vassal corporate entities, have established themselves in Canada and are nibbling away at resource assets or using Canada as a backdoor entry to make direct foreign investments in the United States, sometimes without detection. Their targets include resources, farmland, market access and iconic corporations, assets that they do not allow Canadian or American individuals, corporations or governments to acquire in their own countries. This non-reciprocal and sly strategy is aimed at acquiring assets, undermining competitors and gaining political influence in host countries.

The best option for the U.S. and Canada to survive the new economic reality would be to alter course by devising protective policies and to merge into one gigantic nation. This book, a thought experiment, details the economic benefits of joining forces, the way a deal could be structured in fairness to both nations, the political obstacles littering its path and, lastly, strategies if a merger is impossible. This book is written from my viewpoint, as a dual citizen and business writer, that the interests and values of the two nations are aligned and that a merger makes good business sense.

Canadians still see themselves as very distinct and separate from the United States. They are very proud of their social safety net and would not tolerate any disintegration of it. Only possibility I could ever see for unification is blocks of northern states joining the Canadian confederation.

This is propaganda from the Conservatives in Canada, mainly the Albertan ex-Reform party sect of the Conservative Party of Canada. My prediction is that the cons will be thrown out of office in 2015, in favor of a Liberal-NDP coalition government.

They are quite satisfied with the way things are. Canada is a lovely place, and if you look at the streets of Vancouver, you see little if no trash, unlike in American cities. I never quite understood why people in this country thought it was a good idea to throw their trash from their cars to the highways, or litter places that are breath takengly beautiful.

If I had a second choice of where to live on this planet, I would pick Vancouver BC.

It's usually the hard right who envy the US for it's right wing movement. Or people who want better shopping Or lower taxes.

Most, if you talk to them, don't REALLY want to be American, they just want some of the perks. There are some who just want to be 'one of the cool kids'. See, us Canadians are often subject to American propaganda about how wonderful you all are, and there are some Canadians who just want to be cool too.

THIS Canadian and every single person in my family and extended family have had this discussion (I've had this discussion with friends too) and I'm not personally close to anyone who would say yes (I've talked to a few, but that was years ago). Mostly it's not just no, but HELL NO, lol.

running to their keyboards.

Heck, the 2012 Republican Party platforms in Texas, Iowa and several other states included planks opposing the NAU even though it does not exist. I am sure they are either afraid of Canada's "socialism" or just uber-nationalists. The real danger, of course, would be the opposite - that our policies unfriendly to the middle class would overwhelm Canada's "socialism".

Poutine (/puːˈtiːn/; French: [putin], Quebec French:[put͡sɪn] ( listen)) is a common Canadian dish, originally from Quebec, made with french fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Sometimes additional ingredients are added.[1]

This fast food dish can now be found across Canada, and is also found in some places in the northern United States, although it is still exotic enough there to sometimes need describing.[2] It is sold in small "greasy spoon" type diners (commonly known as cantines or casse-croûtes in Quebec) and pubs, as well as by roadside chip wagons (commonly known as cabanes à patates, literally "potato shacks&quot . National and international chains like New York Fries,[3] McDonald's,[4] A&W,[5] KFC,[6] and Burger King[7] also sell mass-produced poutine in Canada. Poutine may also contain other ingredients such as bacon, beef, pulled pork, lamb, lobster meat, shrimp, duck[8] or rabbit confit,[9] caviar, and truffles.

Both have populations significantly below the USA, and are not expected to become larger than it. And they will not become significantly richer per person than the USA; as they become richer per person, their growth rates will slow. Whoever wrote that has not thought about this subject. It seems to be the book author the book author, so I would say it is a waste of time.

Thiery years ago China instituted the one-child-per-family law. That means way fewer young people to support the older people who can't work as much. By 2030 that will be very serious problem as they will have many fewer people under 47, and way fewer under 25. It will cause a huge economic slowdown for China. You can't have a growing economy with a lopsided population crash.
