Good news for Liberal Democrats and civil libertarians. Bad news for Conservative Democrats.

A Michigan-based for-profit business that manufactures fuel systems, power-steering systems and medical devices does not have the right to an exemption from the Obama administrations birth control mandate, a federal appeals court ruled today.
In a unanimous opinion, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that Autocam Corporation is not entitled to an exemption from the contraceptive mandate, which requires most businesses to provide workers with health insurance that includes no-cost birth control. The court said a secular, for-profit company is not a person that can exercise religion under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).

(5,756 posts)Different circuits are making decisions that the corps DO have religious freedom right and some saying NO, they don't. NO, they don't is the right decision. Corporations are NOT PEOPLE.
It will be interesting to see if, when this gets to SCOTUS, the 5 "conservatives" make some disgusting, results-driven, activist decision like the did in Bush v. Gore, Citizens United, and the Voting Rights Act.

(11,359 posts)I hope the court understands the broader implications. If companies whose owners are personally against birth control can opt out, why not companies whose owners are against blood transfusions, or companies whose owners believe in "faith healing" only.
You religious "freedom" should not include the freedom to enforce your faith on non-believers who work for your company.
