Unless, perhaps, you're holding up a bank or liquor store, and even then you should have the getaway driver in the car.

It takes perhaps three seconds to start a car. Turn it off. Take the keys with you.

My mom used to do that when she took our dog while she ran errands.

And it would be entirely too cavalier of me to suggest they get it fixed.

As for keeping the A/C for the dog, roll down all the windows. Or leave the dog home.

There have been just too many times a car has been stolen because someone left it running to run into a store. The most heartbreaking was a woman whose baby wound up dead because she tried to grab the kid out of the car as the thief was driving away, but the child got tangled up in the car seat straps. Happened in the Kansas City area several years ago. I've heard her 911 call. The kind of thing that should never happen to anyone, but turn off the car.

Or, if you have very good reason to leave it running, always have a spare key with you, so you can lock the car behind you and then get back in. How hard would that be?

Get the dog in the car, start it for the A/C, turn around to say goodbye to the people you were visiting - and then find you're locked out?

Or if it's cold, and you have to scrape ice from the windows - doing the same, but running the engine to warm it up while you're doing the outside of the windows.

so it can warm up while I'm scraping the windows. I'm so totally paranoid about accidentally locking myself out of the car that I make sure at least one window is left open.

Then again I don't have a dog who can do the "lock the doors" trick, which is an unintended consequence of electric door locks.

We have a border collie and I do believe that if something was to happen to me she'd know what to do to get me help. She's shown me so many times with what she has done that she had to be thinking.

But I had 2 Rottie puppies. It was hot, and I just started my truck and the air was on, and I forgot something in the house. I thought I will just run in and get it, and come right out. I did that, and the Rotties were happy to see me back they stood on their hind legs with their paws near the drivers window. Then I heard the sound I was afraid of. One of their big paws locked me out with my truck running. They were happy and cool while I was hot and pissed. I had to call AAA to get them out. I don't have auto windows, so it would have taken a lot for them to roll them down.

Thank goodness I had left the sun roof open. But climbing thru it in heels, hose and a tight skirt along a busy street was not fun.

They have an ancient Suburban that they use to take the wolves to the vet, that vehicle has not the slightest trace of upholstery, carpet or plastic left inside it, even the metal has a somewhat chewed look to it.

I thought this might be that sort of deal.

...is that it's part of a meme called 'pet shaming' for silly or disruptive behaviors that pets sometimes do; often as an act of disobedience due to irresponsible ownership.

There is nothing funny, silly or cute about the pet shaming meme..
