Public Mea Culpa: I now support the NRA.

Specifically, the BLACK NRA.

http://www.upworthy.com/ever-wonder-what-a-double-standard-within-a-double-standard-looks-like

With a goal to "arm every young black man in the country, so they can do normal things like wear hoodies, walk in the rain, and buy Skittles," how can I NOT support this fine organization?

Seriously, HOW could I have been so wrong for so long?

Bravo, Sara Silverman and Black NRA. Bravo!

36. Which top story? People being killed with guns?

Well, Trayvon Martin was killed a while ago, so I'm sure his family is *totally* over it.

Please see this thread for my feelings on the ongoing "top story du jour" which contains links to the 246 mass shootings so far THIS YEAR (but only 29 killed 4 or more, and if you only count the ones where people were shot in the double digits, you only get 7!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023682882

Your opinion on the "poor taste" of the post is duly noted; realistically, we haven't had a point for some time where a "mass shooting" hasn't been one of the "top stories."

Except for the Boston Marathon, of course. That was done with pressure cookers.

That way, we'll have some proper time to discuss things. Until then, you may need to find a gun site where you can hang out. Right wingers will be more receptive to your pleadings.

4. Since when are black people being discriminated against from owning guns?

The big problem is that most black people live in the big cities where draconian gun laws make it difficult for anyone to own a gun. A black NRA will be fighting exactly the same fights as the NRA and other gun rights groups are fighting, so I don't see the need for a separate organization.

I have no problem with black people owning firearms

32. Fair enough, but the question is why.

Are black people being prevented from joining or do they just not want to join? Since most black people live in major cities and the laws in those cities make it difficult to own a firearm, I could understand a lack of interest. Other than racial makeup, how would a black NRA be different?

37. It is supposed to be humorous satire.

The clues were that arming young black men would allow them to live normal lives, and do "normal" things like wear hoodies, walk in the rain, buy Skittles, and live in Florida.

It also calls out the current membership of the NRA because (apparently - I've never been to a meeting) the blinding glow of its whiteness rivals the GOP conventions, with most of its membership terrified of anyone who doesn't look similar to them (hence their need for "protection".

How is the lighting under that bridge?

Since most crimes committed against any person is done by a family member, or someone in their social group, it would only logically follow that FOR ANY GROUP OF PEOPLE, the vast majority of crime will committed by people that look like them.

Don't use right wing racist talking points on DU. They don't go over very well.

I was not agreeing with the violence or the outcome.

I was agreeing that NRA groups and gun companies will gladly sell to anyone. I was attempting to overstate this case by bringing in the KKK and the unfortunate statistics that would make them happy.

I feel the answer to the problem is awareness, education, and economics. Gun control is a political football, not a viable answer.

35. Nope. Think again.

The NRA, and the gun & ammo companies they are a mouthpiece for, will love an arms race. They (being predominantly white) have been arming themselves for the "coming race war" (search references to "Civil War II" or CWII) ever since Obama got elected. They think they can out-buy, out-man, out-gun and out-shoot the {insert vile racial epithet}, in their fantasies of course.

Many of them proclaimed that there would be no election in 2012. Now they are proclaiming that Obama will cancel the 2016 elections on some pretext like the Navy Yard or numerous previous massacres so that he can get a third and fourth term and rule as a dictator.

Regardless of the actual percentages of such believers, the NRA and their companies don't tamp down such speculation since it makes for runs on guns & ammo.

Wed Sep 18, 2013, 06:44 PM

53. I have a question. ...

If the NRA is opposed to Blacks and Hispanics being armed, why does it support "shall issue" concealed carry?

It would seem logical that if the leadership of the NRA was racist, they would support "may issue" concealed carry. "May issue" offers more opportunity for local authorities to discriminate against minorities who wish to legally carry a concealed handgun.

Concealed carry in the United States

***snip***

Shall-Issue

A Shall-Issue jurisdiction is one that requires a permit to carry a concealed handgun, but where the granting of such permits is subject only to meeting determinate criteria laid out in the law; the granting authority has no discretion in the awarding of the permits, and there is no requirement of the applicant to demonstrate "good cause". The laws in a Shall-Issue jurisdiction typically state that a granting authority shall issue a permit if the criteria are met, as opposed to laws in which the authority may issue a permit at their discretion.

Typical permit requirements include residency, minimum age, submitting fingerprints, passing a computerized instant background check (or a more comprehensive manual background check), attending a certified handgun/firearm safety class, passing a practical qualification demonstrating handgun proficiency, and paying a required fee. These requirements vary widely by jurisdiction, with some having few or none of these and others having most or all.

***snip***

May-Issue

A May-Issue jurisdiction is one that requires a permit to carry a concealed handgun, and where the granting of such permits is partially at the discretion of local authorities (frequently the sheriff's department or police), with a few states consolidating this discretionary power under state-level law enforcement. The law typically states that a granting authority "may issue" a permit if various criteria are met, or that the permit applicant must have "good cause" (or similar) to carry a concealed weapon. In most such situations, self-defense in and of itself often does not satisfy the "good cause" requirement, and issuing authorities in some May-Issue jurisdictions have been known to arbitrarily deny applications for CCW permits without providing the applicant with any substantive reason for the denial.

May-Issue can be compared to Shall-Issue where in a May-Issue jurisdiction, the burden of proof for justifying the need for a permit rests with the applicant, whereas in a Shall-Issue jurisdiction the burden of proof to justify denying a permit rests with the issuing authority.
