By Tara Culp-Ressler
About 6.4 million Americans will be able to purchase insurance for less than $100 each month on Obamacares new state-level marketplaces, according to a new report from the Department of Health and Human Services. Thats because those people will be eligible for federal subsidies that will reduce the price of purchasing a plan under the health reform law.
The Obama administration calculated the expected premiums for people buying silver plans, which are the second-cheapest option on the new insurance marketplaces. Even though not every marketplace has announced its premium rates yet, researchers were still able to estimate those payments based on the health laws rule for determining subsidies.
Americans who make up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level which works out to be $94,200 for a family of four are eligible for subsidies that ensure theyll only pay a certain percentage of their income for a health plan. Using census data on Americans income levels, researchers were able to extrapolate how many of them would be paying less than $100 for monthly premiums for silver plans.
The new HHS report aligns with previous research that has found that many Americans wont be covering the full cost of premiums for individual plans on Obamacares marketplaces. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 48 percent of the Americans who need to buy insurance on the marketplaces will receive federal subsidies to help them afford it. That number rises even more for young Americans between the ages of 18 to 34 years old, who comprise the largest share of any age group to benefit from this cost-saving provision.

(51,666 posts)that is much less likely to lead to economic ruin if people actually use their insurance.

(39,909 posts)Especially for a family struggling to put food on the table?
Everybody has an extra Hundred a month laying around!!!
Especially for "Insurance" that they can't afford to use.
How easy you make it all sound.
Just a HUNDRED DOLLARS A MONTH!!!!
For most Hard Working People I know struggling to make ends meet (and falling further behind every month) it might as well be a Million Dollars a month.
Glad to hear that for some, a Hundred a Month is so Easy Peasy.
It is projected that between 40 Million & 70 Million Americans will be "uninsured" in 2014, either because they can't afford it, or believe they don't need it.
Depending on the State, a percentage of these will be covered by the Medicaid Expansion, but MILLIONS will be mandated on to The Exchanges and forced to cough up their part to a Rich Insurance Corporation for a product that will Cost Extra to actually use.
I don't think the majority are going to be happy with this.
We will see,
but there is ONE Group that is OVERJOYED.
The Smart Money is betting that The Mandate will be a Gold Mine for the parasitic Health Insurance Industry. Stock prices have more than DOUBLED:
2014, and The Mandate to BUY Health Insurance from RICH, Private Corporations, now with Guaranteed PROFITS approaches.
It will be an interesting year,
especially when photos of the 1%Upper Management with their new Summer Homes in Aspen, new Yachts, and new Jets start showing up on the Internet.
You will know them by their WORKS,
and whether a Hundred Dollars a Month is Chump Change to them.

(116,464 posts)Well, it's better than the up to $1,000 or more per month that some paid before Obamacare.
I mean, it may not be as sweet as an additional 5 percent to 10 percent payroll tax to pay for single payer, but it's a lot better than the pre-Obamacare system.
