I understand why many on DU support President Obama's call for attacks on Syria.

Many on DU are among President Obama's best supporters. They have stood by him through all the bitterly partisan attacks leveled at him (quite often in the vilest, most racist terms) and they now see our rejection of his call to attack Syria as just another attempt to weaken the President. They are wrong this time.

I hate war; I hate its waste; I hate its violence; I hate its destruction and I hate how it turns my country into a nation of crazed, bloodthirsty maniacs. Once we begin a war, the War-Lovers take over everywhere, and those who want peace are mocked as weaklings and cowards. I do not, however, care what they choose to call those of us who are trying to prevent yet another unnecessary, illegal war of choice. This war is unlikely to achieve its stated goals, and it is one which we have very little chance to win in any meaningful sense. We simply have no choice but to try and stop the damn thing now.

If we can somehow succeed in stopping this war before it begins, we will have done the American people (including those who support attacking Syria on DU) and their descendants a very valuable service, whether they all appreciate it right now or not.

And after its start, too. You know, the ones blacked out by US media?

Lotta good they did. Doesn't matter what the world wants. Only matters what the PWM (peo$$$ple who mat$$$ter) want.

I was among those who tried, in my own admittedly limited way, to make the American public see what an unnecessary mistake their government was about to make. It is cold comfort to know that most Americans now realize what a momentous blunder the Iraq War was for our country.

This time, though, things are quite different. We have a very good chance of stopping a war against Syria. Polls show the public is very opposed to it in a large majority, and if reports are correct, Congress may not even give its approval. At any rate, it is just too fundamentally important, we have to try.

I do have the capability to analyze the rationales, merits and pitfalls of military action all on my own, regardless of who is in the White House or what everyone thinks on DU.

The very same reliable, predicatable, very small group of mouthpieces for every corporate/neoncon/neolib outrage this administration has perpetrated on the country support it.

Ignore the propaganda.

The only up or down poll right now on DU about it (on the front page because I just kicked it up) shows 93% against Syrian intervention, 4% for, and 3% as "Other", whatever the hell that means.

As usual the apologists for Obama's neo-liberal (and now neo-conservative) agenda, are the same ones who are knee-jerk in favor of anything this President does simply because he has a "D" behind his name.

I had not seen that poll. It is great to know the numbers of those who think war is the answer is so tiny here on DU.
