I don't know what you know about flight deck operations, but I'm guessing somewhere along the way you either heard or read McCain was some kind of cowboy who "wet started" his airplane. That wet start made flames shoot out of his "tail pipe" and caused a bomb to explode, resulting in the whole mess. This former flight deck sailor is once more going to try and set the story straight for a DUer who has it wrong, and I'm going to try to do it as nicely as I can this time as I've had posts hidden before for getting upset over what I know to be a lie.
The diagram below illustrates the way aircraft are parked at the beginning of a launch evolution. Notice they are parked so their exhaust is not pointed at any other aircraft. This is known as TOW, or "tail over the water". This diagram is actually the diagram from the Forrestal when the accident happened. The circle on the left is the F-4 (tail #110) from which the Zuni was accidentally launched, and the circle on the right is the A-4 (tail #405 parked next to McCain's plane) the Zuni hit. Some of the men who died were actually in their racks (bunks) when the first bomb went off and blew the hole in the flight deck. Their berthing area was on the 03 Level.
I was lucky enough to have worked with men who were there on the flight deck of the Forrestal that day. I remember watching the training film we saw about a hundred times with one of them. It was called something like "Forrestal: Trial by Fire". It was like he was there all over again. Guess where I was the very first time I heard the wet start story, and that John McCain was even there? Right here on DU. I was stunned, because that isn't how it happened. I know the wet start story isn't and CAN'T be true, because I WORKED on the flight deck, and that's not and never was how things operate there.
So do me a favor. Do those good men who died, and the good men who got injured a favor. Get it right. Don't do it for McCain. Fuck him. Do it for them. They don't deserve to be used in a lie like that.

What I had read about the accident was that some kind of ordnance had gone off
and a fire started on the deck of the ship and that after the fire started McCain did
not help in fighting the fire something which many of his fellow pilots did. I seemed
to remember that a bomb that was on McCain's plane somehow got released and it exploded
when the fire reached it.
