The most mean-spirited (and revealing) right-wing column you will read this week

This is from the very end:

While I believe the federal food stamp program to be unconstitutional, immoral and a state issue, the simple fact is that the program is not going away. There are more people on the dole now than at any other point in United States history, and with more Americans seemingly fine with the idea of taking government handouts, as Mr. EBT and Jesse Jackson have shown, the numbers will continue to grow. My reform measures might seem draconian to some (and the antithesis of the free market), but they would hopefully have the desired result of reducing food stamp rolls so we could eventually eliminate the program and let the states handle the issue. Before accepting food stamps, people would have to carefully consider whether they want to face the loss of voting privileges, the humiliation of shopping at government stores and using government food, the inability to smoke or do drugs and the added inconvenience of having to make two or three stops for their groceries should they choose to buy snacks with their own money. Plus, tax producers would no longer have to knowingly be face to face with people at the check-out who are on government assistance but have nicer cell phones and accessories than they do.

There should be humiliation and pain in government assistance. Every time someone accepts food stamps, they are spitting on the principles of independence, and they, not the taxpayers who fund the program, should be reminded of that fact.

And it's a good idea to place them on bus lines in areas with abandoned grocery stores. It would provide jobs in depressed urban areas. Instead of the government running it, the store function should be contracted out too. IIRC, something similar to this was done during the Depression. There is a side issue on this. If food prices were significantly cheaper, which they would be because there is no branding of the products, the stores would also be frequented heavily by everyone else not receiving assistance but wanting or needing cheap food. Of course this would tend to defeat this jerk's intent of shaming people. But when it comes to eating to survive, there is no shame. Elderly Social Security dollars are stretched too. And for this reason, the idea would never fly. There would be too much competition with conventional grocery stores and big money would never allow it to happen. But I like the idea.

The rest of the article is hateful shit. But even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Lots of DUers here were glad to see their tax dollars going to a kill-on-sight operation against Osama Bin Laden.

There was one thread on DU 2.0 where one poster said "I told you it was a kill on sight order!" after some damning evidence came out, and more than half the responses were "Damned right it was! Hoorah! You're an idiot if you think that's wrong, blah blah blah".

It's just that Bin Laden was a... um... special example. Or something.

Given Philips background in investment news letter publishing and private equity financing I would say Romney is his guy. And if Romney is Philips guy, McClanahan is a mouth piece for both of them.

9. Brion (correct spelling) McClanahan is one of the many right wing hack writers from Regnery Press.
Tue Feb 28, 2012, 06:55 PM
Feb 2012

He is published by Regnery press under Regnery's, "Politically Incorrect Guide" series. This book series is designed specifically, it appears, to give voice to the most inflammatory, hateful and reactionary political commentary targeted towards the right wing activist community. It is a very profitable niche publisher who's books can be found prominently displayed at CPAC. This should be no surprise since one of CPAC's principle sponsors is Human Events, which like Regnery Publishing is owned by Eagle Publishing.

Regnery made modern fame for publishing, "Unfit for Command" by former Swift Boat Veteran John O'Neill and veteran author Dr. Jerome Corsi. The latter is coeditor of World Net Daily or World Nut Daily as it is affectionately known by left wingers and other folks who have a brain.

This latest series by Regnery follows in the Swift Boat tradition of revisionist history and out right character assassination.

Below is a small sample of McClanahan's bilious commentary for those who wish to have a peak.

I oppose some so-called "war on poverty programs", (14 trillion and counting since the Great Society with awful results) as they do instill and reinforce a dependency and entitlement mindset among its recipients, but food and EBT is a completely different story.

The subsidies benefit both business and families, especially during relatively difficult economic times for many.

His opposition is fueled by pure hatred, and would gleefully either deny and/or dehumanize those who receive benefits.

What an asshole.

20. I know exactly how to end this kind of shit
Wed Feb 29, 2012, 12:31 AM
Feb 2012

There needs to be a federal law that when a right-winger publishes this kind of shit, the following needs to happen--immediately:

1. Suspend the winger from his or her job for an undisclosed period of time of between 3 and 9 weeks--and every winger will get a different length of suspension. The winger's boss will take said person back at the end of the suspension. We The People will send a qualified person to fill in for the winger so that the people who buy things from him or her will not be injured.

2. Lock the winger out of his or her sources of funds: no access to savings or checking accounts, because people like this have plenty of money and the people they are denigrating don't. We The People will ensure that the winger's bills are automatically debited from their bank account--we're trying to teach these people a valuable lesson, not destroy their lives like being foreclosed upon or having their cars repo'd would do.

3. Send government agents to the winger's house to collect up all the food in the house. All staples will be placed in ratproof storage. Perishables that can be frozen, will be. Perishables that can't be frozen, will be donated to the local food bank. An EBT card will be issued to the winger, loaded with the proper funds for a family with two more children than the winger has...because...

4. We will then drop a couple foster kids off at the winger's house, just to add to the pleasure of temporary yet total desperation.

There will be two possible outcomes from this lesson: the winger will become more understanding of the plight of the less-fortunate, or the winger will not. If the winger does not become more understanding, we fill his bathtub for water, dress him in a t-shirt that says "I Am The Government" on it, and invite Grover Norquist over.
