3:30 into it is when it begins, just as the man is attempting to purchase some honey cookies for the Jewish New Year.
Filth. And I ain't talking about Weiner.

(20,600 posts)What a racist asshole. Talking about a man's wife is a sure invitation to a violent reaction.

(18,402 posts)And nowhere do I hear him say anything about Weiner's wife being an Arab. Au contraire, he says "Thing about your wife, the person you trust most ... how could you do that to her?"
Weiner did not have to engage with this guy. But it's Weiner who comes off as the bully and *hole. This man has no business running for office.

(89,247 posts)it was one of the first things he said
quinnox
(20,600 posts)He said he considers marrying an Arab to be a "betrayal".
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)he states, "married to an arab," right after the initial accusations of "you're a real scumbag, Anthony"
The guy then tries to walk it back in the part you quote, later in the video.

(62,270 posts)The argument was clearly about the disrespect, the jackass comment, etc. So he decided to use the best ammo he had, accusing Weiner of being a deviant. He later admitted to saying the "married to an Arab" comment and justified it because he feels as a Jew being married to an Arab is a "betrayal."
I think if Weiner heard the "married to an Arab" comment or at least could identify who said it, he would've focused completely on that slur. It was highly disgraceful and he would've won the argument easily.

(18,402 posts)It should never have been said, and it's not right. But the conversation seems not to have been about that, and I don't see the guy's statement later as "trying to walk it back." He seems very sincere about disapproving of the behavior and asking how he could do that to his wife. It's an opinion about which you may agree or disagree, but the guy, as a voter and citizen, has the right to express that opinion to someone who has put themselves in the position of public office.
The point about Weiner is that he clearly doesn't have the temperament to be in a position of governance. As a public figure, people are going to disagree with you, even say nasty things about you. You don't need to engage on that level, and I still think he sounded like an asshole.

(19,429 posts)Technically, the marriage of a Jew to a non-Jew would not be recognized as legal.

(19,497 posts)This may well be what is portrayed but I wouldn't put it past him to fake another sympathy play to cover his disgrace.

(12,151 posts)I think Weiner has some problems, but he stayed extremely cool given that guy's disgusting racist comment.
There's a thread on DU somewhere that leaves out that part entirely.

(16,184 posts)Weiner's an asshole, but he's completely in the right to nearly lose his shit on this.

(20,600 posts)Weiner offered a quick retort, then said to no one in particular, "Very nice, that's a charming guy right there." It's then that the man, later identified as Saul Kessler, responded: "Married to an Arab."
Reached by CNN later in the day, Kessler admitted calling out Weiner for being "married to an Arab."
"It's just a certain feeling I have as a Jew," said the 51-year-old real estate manager, explaining his remark. "And my attitude is that -- not all Arabs -- but, in general, ... they want to kill every Jew."
Kessler said of a Jewish person marrying into such a family: "It's like a betrayal."

(62,270 posts)So he didn't make the accusation. The ensuing argument was a testosterone filled jumble of incoherency (I've been there, it sucks, when you can't make a coherent point because your adrenalin is rushing). But even then I would think that the "married to an Arab" comment was extremely useful ammo in such an argument. I would look at them, go "Married to an Arab? And you think you can judge me when you're clearly a bigot? You're trash. You're beneath every kind person in this store." Boom, walk away.
Not saying Weiner was wrong, but I think he defended himself on the wrong information. It was, from what I saw (watched it twice) more about the jackass comment.
