The UAE Reporter Killed in the Cairo Massacre Was a Former Student of Mine

I am in shock right now as I found out one of my former students at the American University of Sharjah, Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz, was one of those killed during the crackdown this week.

I found out in the worst way as I saw her face while watching Democracy Now.

I taught Habiba both writing and she served as an editor for the University newspaper when I was the faculty sponsor for the paper.

She was one of those people who was always sweet, kind, and extremely hard-working.

My heart goes out to her family as Egypt has lost one of its future leaders today.

5. I can even give you what she was thinking... she worked for a smallish Dubai paper, Xpress

and was home on leave for the Eid break... I know she was committed to democracy and wanted to get a good story.

7. That's just it... I am back stateside and am trying to shut out the news

It depresses the hell out of me...

Just know the generals in Egypt were bankrolled by KSA, UAE and the other kingdoms to take out the Brotherhood...

Think of it as a hired hit on a whole country.

The crackdown will continue as long as the money flows.

10. Further explains why we (US) is so "boxed in"....

I have worked/spent a lot of time in Egypt and felt safe going nearly everywhere on my own (most never realized I was American). This depresses the hell out of me, as well

I don't know what to say beyond that. Another friend posted yesterday of losing a dear friend in Cairo and she is heartbroken. Such waste! I am sorry.

20. That is so sad, and must have been a huge shock to you. I am sorry!

The only thing to hope for regarding all those who are dying, is that eventually Egypt will become a true democracy so that their lives are honored.
