Senate _ finally _ approves Obama nominee for ATF

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has voted in dramatic fashion to approve one of President Barack Obama's nominees. It took one senator to switch her vote, another to fly back from North Dakota and an afternoon roll call that stretched into the evening.

Five hours after the vote started, the Senate voted Wednesday to end Republican delaying tactics against B. Todd Jones, Obama's pick to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

To win that crucial showdown, Democrats had to persuade Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski to switch her vote. They also had to wait for Democratic North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp to fly back to Washington from her home state.

Senators then gave final approval to Jones' nomination on a 53 to 42 vote.
