Sharia law?

Has something happened to make our right wing brethren think that Sharia law is going to be enacted somewhere in the U.S.? First, North Carolina passes a bill the rejects Sharia law and today there is an LTTE in my local paper that reads:

Letter: Follow U.S. Laws When Living Here

If Shariah law gets approved in our country, it will be like opening up a gold-rush effect and will tear our country apart. Every other nationality will follow suit and demand their own laws. And where does that leave people who don’t even understand foreign law? Do we go to other countries and use our laws or do we use their laws?

I believe that this is the United States of America, and we have our own laws. If people from other countries don’t like our laws and won’t adapt to them, then they shouldn’t have come here. They would be better apt to stay in their own country.

We should insist that staying here means following our policies, rules and regulations — American law.

They made the choice to change their lives by coming here. So be it.

Have I missed something or is someone out there stirring up the RWNJs with these rumors?

against something they've been trying to hold onto, doesn't it? I wonder what Sharia law says about contraception and abortion.

Sharia law allows for abortion. While there are some circumstances where it isn't allowed, it offers much more 'freedom' to laws that Republicans are trying to pass.

I looked into this a while back when I had the same idea you had.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R), his party’s nominee for governor, launched a new campaign website Wednesday highlighting his efforts to reinstate Virginia’s unconstitutional Crimes Against Nature law. The rule, which makes felons out of even consenting married couples who engage in oral or anal sex in the privacy of their own homes . . . .

There are regular stories about divorced Orthodox Jews where the husband refused to an issue a "Get" (religious divorce decree), causing no end of trouble despite having no legal authority.

The alleged Conservative fear of the advance of Sharia Law in the USA is propaganda of the Christian Right designed to lay the popular foundation to pursue pro-Christian legislation in the US.

It is a perverse lie whereby one religion - Christianity - actually is pursuing a theocracy, and is vilifying another religion - Islam - by accusing it of pursuing, in the USA, what is actually their own agenda.
