Serious question: Conservative Cave folks attacking members of a cooking and baking forum

Last edited Sun Jul 28, 2013, 10:00 PM - Edit history (1)

where they exchange recipes, discuss ingredients.

Now if you find yourself manly or womanly after running down members of a group.

Sharing recipes because you think they aren't ... holy, manly, womanly or godly enough, I think you need to sit down and have a conversation with your therapist.

When you ridicule folks exchanging recipes based upon whether you agree with their politics, you have lost all grasp on politics and need to re-evaluate your approach to life. Cooking you a pancake isn't Democratic or Republican. It's that somebody gave a damn to do it.

They are a small, dark corner of the internet filled with people who are exremely disturbed, with no lives, and led by a true psycho. I watched it for about two weeks about a year or so ago and recognized where some of our own 'DUers' came from. Not hard to spot, and then clicked them off. I use my FB for my news writing mostly. What eats time like you would not believe is the twitter feed, and the Facebook page for brush fires, like today. We had not one...but four vegetation fires at one point. Updating the twitter and the brush party line and three scanners were all kinds of "fun."

And I was planning to write some fiction today.

The young and the restless...downtown edition, continues tomorrow. Pressers with 45 minutes to get to them...best case...woohoo!!!

It takes creativity, math skills, timing, and a host of other skills to take raw ingredients, mix them correctly, apply heat, and turn them into something not only edible but enjoyable.

Opening a can of chef-boy-ardee over a homemade alcohol stove that could spill over any minute takes a lot of practice, too. Or just eat it out of the can and pray that the apocalypse doesn't come again two years later and render canned food inedible. Nuclear weapons wouldn't. Not if they were in your bunker 500 feet into the Earth. They could set up a great society there, and they could stay hidden for 500 years, letting their "rugged individualism" and "general godliness that leads to innovation" do the trick for them.

Well, except bathrooms, running water, dentistry and medicine attention. But they are too determined and godly to need any of that! Wait, where are the ammunition factories? You are telling me there are no gun stores or things to shoot, either, in this bunker?

We allow ingredients to be combined as long as they aren't endangered species on the grill, don't cause chemical explosions when combined, and generally make a meal that doesn't give you botulism or other debilitating illness because of said recipe/cooking/meal advice.

When they find something truly mock-worthy, they pounce, or at least, "mock-worthy" to their guano-minds.

There was a thread on old DU somewhere when we were talking in C&B about cast iron pan care, and it turned into a sarcastic and fun free-for-all of all the techniques one should not do to cast iron pans, as if we were seriously using them. The cavities took us dead-serious, and had a whole thread of mocking and laughing at us for our stupidity. Talk about dense! Then again, they're in a dank, dark cave, while we have an underground!

WHY would anyone bother reading a post from a place called "Conservative Cave"? I've been active online for years, and I've never heard of the place.

Do you realize the effort involved in searching it out just to read posts that mock your efforts in "Cooking and Baking"? Says a lot about the OP. No offense intended. This is an internet forum, not your local neighborhood coffee house.

There's a difference between online and real life. (for the most part)

A few years back I was into cooking and baking in a real, real big way - but as things in my life suddenly shifted gears - I ceased giving it the thought that is necessary to be good at it. One of these days I will have to get into it again. I'm glad there is a forum right here on DU that can help people who are approaching cooking and baking seriously.

Is to add one or two mild Italian sausages to your mix.

I use 50/50 ground beef and pork. Add to that 2 mild Italian sausages that you have removed the casing from.

Try adding a few extra herbs and spices you might not think of adding normally like sage and cumin or even lemon zest. I like sage and have had good results with a meatloaf heavy on sage and ground Rosemary.

Play! Make two or 3 little ones, changing the spice palate between them.

It reminds me of a sign I saw once in a fancy white-table-cloth authentic Japanese restaurant:

"We make our own shoyu. Even if we didn't, we'd never serve you Kikkoman because we like you too much to feed you inferior soy sauce." (Apparently they had people coming in and asking for soy sauce then complaining that it didn't taste like the plastic envelope crap they were used to.)

That's how I feel about mass-produced mayo. I make my own or if I'm in a hurry, I use full-fat Duke's because it tastes the most like my own.

Yeah. I mean it's not terrible, but it's not really the genuine artifact and it tastes different: blander, saltier.

The sign was kind of food-snobby and snotty to be honest, but gourmands and chefs that are really into food quality and authenticity should be a little snobbish and snotty about these things.

I am that way about mayonnaise. There is no such thing as mass-produced mayo that tastes as good as the fresh genuine article.

Jul 2013

I have a somewhat rare progressive disease and frequent a forum for suffers of it. There had been a lot of members, over the years, who had lost or had never had healthcare. It was tearing me up. These people were desperate for help and didn't know where to turn. They had to make the choice of going bankrupt, maybe making their families homeless or not getting treatment.

Some republican members would give lectures to the uninsured, saying that they should have planned better and to sell their possessions and even pray. I jump in, guns a blazing. How the hell can you plan for a disabling disease? You can't work, then you lose your healthcare, can't get more insurance with a pre-existing condition (back then) and also the costs are out of control. Some people had been trying for years to get on disability and couldn't.....what happens to those people?

I can't stand to be on forums with these arseholes. I only go there because there are some sensible people and also it's a good place to find the latest research/treatments.

I always tell these right wingers that even though I have health insurance, I have empathy for those that don't. I always put a link to the UK's NHS web site. I have to calm down now, lol.
