...it reminded me how AWESOME NASA is.

I'm a bit young to remember the event (@ 47) but I certainly remember Apollo 14-17. I remember sitting in front of the Radiation King color TV in the family room watching John Chancellor narrate the wonder unfolding in front of me.

It was a great technical achievement, yes, but so is gene splicing. I am not sure it is useful to try to single moments of technical achievement, particularly since all such moments rest squarely on the previous achievements, many of which were clearly greater leaps at the time.

amazing how many things/people from that era, are so far ahead of them in the nation's conciousness
