and that the Nation had moved past the unfortunate incident that clouded her last years.

She really was a treasure and I'll always appreciate her contributions and SPUNK!

DFW, our DUer who knew Helen best, I know you must be grieving now.

And, on edit, here's how I'll always remember Helen in my mind:

Thomas covered 10 presidents over nearly half a century, and became a legend in the industry.

She was a fixture at White House news conferences -- sitting front and center late in her career -- where she frequently exasperated government spokesmen with her pointed questions.

107. It was acknowledged by James Zogby on his weekly television show that used to air on LinkTV

Here was my post of the video of that show on DU many years back and a frame of the portion where she was shown with DU flowers then... Too bad that LINK TV recently chose to discontinue Zogby's show. It was a good watch before on middle eastern issues...

Ms. Thomas WILL be missed! We really need more to follow in her footsteps, as so many of her generation of REAL journalists are now fading from us now.

He began mourning the inevitable loss of this grand lady some time back and shared with us.

The White House correspondence bar of excellence will be set by her. It seems like DFW was describing her weaning days with such feeling.

I hope someone does a documentary on Helen. Personally, a well written script should go into a movie to remind younger generations of how important she was.

75. So Sad - a treasure has been lost

When I first discovered DU so many, many years ago, I also discovered Helen Thomas. She became my hero in the Bush era so much that I even wrote to her once via e-mail and received a short, beautiful response from her.

I hadn't told her that I had been going through cancer at the time. Her note meant so much to me during my period of isolation and recovery. It was one of "those moments" that gave me the will and courage to fight back against the illness, so that I could join the fight against the Republicans and the damage being caused to the country I loved.

Thank you, dear Helen - You have no idea the countless lives you touched and made better just by telling the truth. We will miss you.

I am very sure you have a Front Row seat in Heaven, too. You are loved.

80. The best, most outspoken journalist

in the MSM (until recently).
I watch alternative news, when I watch it all since Helen was relieved of her MSM duties. She was the last of our true MSM journalists.
Many of her contributions to honest journalism are already considered historic facts.

One-of-kind journalist and lady.. thank you Helen.

89. They made her a pariah just like Dan Rather,

Phil Donahue, Bill Moyers and several others. They tear down anyone in the way. They have lawfirms and private investigation firms on the payroll to do it along with other journalists. We cannot let them get away with it anymore. Lets all boycott networks in honor of these great journalists!

97. There are documentaries about Helen out there

One of them was called "Thank you, Mr. President." It's how reporters now bid farewell to the president of the US after he answers the final question of a press conference. It wasn't done until the tradition was started by the one journalist in the room who gave the president (no matter which one) probably the meanest grilling of the whole session: Helen Thomas.

Thanks to those who mentioned me on here and remembered that Helen was a friend of mine and my family.

I have posted a memorial thread of my own elsewhere on GD, if anyone's interested.

110. Sad is not right

We should not be sad. She was 92 and lived a great life. We should be happy she lived, worked where she did and continued to be a thorn in the side of Presidents as long as she could. She was always a well prepared lady. She was not rude or crude but she was often a pain in the ass.

RIP

Helen demonstrated that non-Israeli journalists are not allowed to have opinions about Israel,
just like non-Venezuelan journalists are not allowed to have opinions about Venezuela.

Simple mathematics.

119. I can never express how much I admired Helen Thomas and how saddened

I was by her treatment in her last years, especially since the "Israel can do no wrong" mantra has since become more balanced and she had every right to express herself, coming from an Arab background. I never knew her heritage before the controversy. My mom was the same age as Thomas, older by only a few weeks, and had been very politically active locally. She died at 91. A Democrat in a Republican area, she did most of the coordinating for JFK's local visit while he was barnstorming the country in 1960. By eighty she had lost her sharp edge and awareness of politics. Helen was still going strong, and I sadly regretted that my mother hadn't stayed equally sharp. The last political remark I remember her making came while my brother and I were complaining about Dubya while visiting her in her nursing home near the end of his term. "I don't know why everyone complains about Bush. He seems like a nice man." We were certainly taken aback by that remark. Mom didn't even "like Ike" and we had often argued about this when I reevaluated my opinion of him in the eighties. RIP Ms. Thomas, indeed.
