...courtesy of the Boomers, thank you very much.
Becoming more in touch with our own existence in the early sixties, started with a growing distrust of what the establishment had planned for us and ended with a resounding affirmation of our sovereign will.
Along the way we discovered and discussed our deepest thoughts about matters that were, for practical purposes, a complete mystery to us. Our bodies, our desires, our beliefs etc....
Cannabis and The Pill changed everything. With these two icons of the 60's we found we could go quickly and profoundly into, perhaps, the one thing we had been searching for all along, that being a deep inter-personal relationship.
In my world, The Pill showed up first. That changed a lot of things when women gained control of their bodies. They made men pay attention in ways that we had never known about. The early values of Women's Liberation taught us about equality not just between the sexes, but between races and cultures. Maybe even more important, it allowed women access to their most fundamental physiological/spiritual/psychological inclinations. Men weren't there yet.....
Thankfully, along came cannabis. It acted as a catalyst for men to get in touch with THEIR physiological/spiritual/psychological inclinations. We discussed and discovered important things about ourselves and our relationships with others and eventually realized the importance of humanism in the 'grand scheme of things', the established culture of exploitation and competition. A popular feminist book at the time Our Bodies, Our Selves, gave both sexes a new slogan in support of our values.
The current discourse is really impeding the growth of the human spirit that began with the boomer generation. Birth control technology over the years has unleashed the 'human spirit' in ways that challenge the deeply entrenched anti-humanistic industrialized culture. Not to mention the elevation of cannabis to the status of medicine....
